Dysfunctional Chef – Labor Day and …. Liquored Up?

On August 30, 2013 by Janice Taylor

Our Lady of Weight Loss is lounging on the zero-gravity recliner in the back courtyard.  Every so often she “yells” something to me.  Directions, you might say.

“I have a request,” she says.  “Be sure to wish all the Tushkateers (and anyone else who is reading our posts), a heartfelt Happy Labor Day Weekend.”  A minute later, “And today, share two of my favorite alcoholic beverage recipes.  And remind everyone NOT to drive and drink.  Yes?”

“Ok!”  I bellow back.   Even though alcoholic beverages are not the usual recipes that OLofWL shares, I do what I am told.   And again, Our Lady doesn’t drink and drive, I don’t drink and drive, so please do not drink and drive!

Side Bar Drinking Story:  Back in the day, a few friends and I took the train (from NYC to Jersey) to visit another friend.  We spent the entire day there.  We BBQ’ed, we drank, and our friend’s husband who was going to drive us back to the city at the end of the day, drank and drank and drank.   AND come the end of the day, he said, “Okay, I’m ready to drive everyone back [to NYC].”

It took a lot of guts, frankly, to swim against the stream, but I dug deep and said, “You know.  I tell my kids never to drive n’ drink and not to allow anyone who has been drinking to drive.  So, I’m really sorry, but I think we should take car service, or the train, or whatever.”

I was met with tons of opposition.   I said, “Sorry, again, but  I can’t do something I tell my kids not to do.  And even if I didn’t have kids, I thinking drinking and driving is a bad idea.”

The well-meaning and kind, yet misguided, husband said, “It’s not a problem.  I’m used to drinking and driving.  I do it all the time.  I’ve never been in an accident.”

And then my “friends” backed him up!  I stood my ground and we called car service which cost $70 divided by three.   Once safely on the other side of the Hudson River, one friend thanked me.  She said that she was afraid to go against the others, but was secretly happy that I stood my ground.

Do NOT drink and drive.

NOW, without further ado, here follows:  Our Lady of Weight Loss’s Favorite Alcoholic Beverage Recipes!

Michelada  ~   Essentially, the Michelada is a bloody Mary that substitutes beer for vodka. Plus salt around the rim!  Oh my – a five star drink!

Ingredients:
sea salt
1 lime
Clamato juice
Mexican beer i.e., Sol Corona

Instructions:  Cut lime in 1/2.  Run one half along the top rim of a ‘highball’ glass.  Pour sea salt onto flat plate.  Dip limed rim into salt.   Squeeze the other 1/2 lime into glass/  Throw in a handful of ice.  Pour 1/2 clamato juice; the other half beer.

Have a happy and safe weekend.  Salud!
