The common growth of Mother Earth
Suffices me,her tears, her mirth,
Her humblest mirth and tears.

Earth Day was first celebrated on
March 21, 1970.
Mayor Joseph L. Alioto, Mayor of the City and County of
San Francisco, at the request of John McConnell,
president of WE, Inc. (now Earth Society), designated the
Vernal Equinox as a special day to remember "Earth's
tender seedlings of life and people; a day for planting
trees and flowers; a day for cleaning streams and wooded
glens." He decreed that on EARTH DAY the EARTH FLAG
which portrays in its center our 'Beautiful Blue Planet,'
be flown to encourage mutual respect for Earth and all its
people.
