Mental Fitness:
A Guide to Revitalzing Your Brain Circuits
As the natural aging process progressively sets in, our mental and physical functions can, in time, become impaired.
How to slow this process?
In addition to a well-balanced and healthful diet as well as physical exercise, neurobics can aid the anti-aging process.
What are neurobics?
Neurobics are my kind of exercise. They are aerobic workouts for the brain that help activate new brain circuits, which enhance the brain's production of neurotrophins (natural growth factors). Neurotrophins help the brain’s ability to combat the effects of the mental aging process.
According to the Department of Neurobiology in the Duke University Medical Center, you can keep your brain nimble and ready for new challenges with neurobics. Neurobics help stimulate the brain's activity, change the patterns of activity in your brain and create new connections in areas that process sensory input.
Neurobics can be done just about anywhere and at anytime. The trick is to utilize your five physical senses (see, hear, taste, feel, smell) and your emotional sense in unconventional ways. In order to WAKE UP, you want to shake up and break up your mental routine!
Here are some fun neurobic exercises.
-
Upon waking, use your non-dominant hand as you comb your hair, get dressed, brush your teeth or make coffee.
- Close your eyes as you shower and use your sense of touch to locate your soap and wash yourself.
- Pair an odor and a specific task. Sniff mint leaves while calling your mother, to help you remember the number.
- Play "smell and tell." Have friends or family members close their eyes, sniff an aroma held under their nose, and let them tell you what it is that they are smelling.
- Turn the pictures on your desk or shelves upside down.
- Rearrange your living room or office furniture.
- Take a different route to work or shopping.
- Eat a meal with your family in silence. Use only visual cues. (Alternatively, if they insist on speaking, wear ear-plugs.)
- Listen to music while you smell the roses (or the flower of your choice).
- Take your child, life-partner or parent to your work for the day.
(Did you hear that kids? I’m coming to work with you!)
Wow, I'm exhausted. I strengthened the synapses between my nerve cells, and now my brain cells are busy making growth molecules. Technically speaking, it takes energy to fire those neurons. I wonder how many calories I burned.
Make today different. Change your brain. Neurobicize!

Righteous Recipe ~ White Fish Soy Style
1
lb white fish fillets (small)
3
teaspoons soy sauce
2
teaspoons sugar
1
teaspoon toasted, crushed sesame seeds
1
teaspoon chopped onions
2
teaspoons crunched garlic
black pepper
salt
Wash fish well and cut diagonal slits on top and bottom in the flesh. If large, cut into two pieces.
Sprinkle the fish with salt and let stand three hours on a rack so that the moisture drips off.
Mix the seasonings in number two above and work them into the slits in the fish.
Broil on a rack over fire basting with additional seasonings as needed.
Brain Cell Salad - for the kids. I know Halloween is over, but it's just too good to not share.

Last week's Fruitful query: The Friday after Thanksgiving is called 'black Friday.'
PPM of Greensboro, NC writes: Because frenzied holiday buyers spend loads of
money shopping, hence, the accounting books of
various merchants and department stores go from
being in the red, to being in the black. Voila-
Black Friday. 6 lbs down, 34 to go......

Hi OLofWL: The end of the year is here and I started woefully looking at last year's unfulfulled resolutions.
I keep making sensible weightloss and exercise goals, but never fully realize them. I have lost 10 lbs this year but I had planned for so much more. And exercise still eludes me eventhough I have all kinds of equipment at home! Thank you for the forum to whine. Any suggestions/inspiration would help. ~ Yvette, New York
Dear Yvette, First, congratulations on your 10 lb. loss. Could have gone in the other direction, you know. Even though you may not be exactly where you want to be, you are farther down the Road to Sveltesville than you were a year ago. That's a really good thing. And, ahhh, yes - the exercise equipment, which doubles as a napping place for the cat and a place to hang one's clothing (in my home, anyway).
Here are my suggestions: This is NYC! Walk a little more. Get a pedometer, so you can challenge yourself. Write out what you are eating. Whenever I write it down, I eat less. I stop taking bites and licks off everyone's plates. (They are all grateful, as well.) Thanks much for writing. I loved your 'whine.' Feel free to write again. ~ OLofWL
