Dear Our Lady of Thanksgiving,

May I overstuff the turkey
rather than myself.

But, should I succumb,
over-indulge, carbo-load, or
drift into a burnt-marshmallow-
sweet-potato
sugar-induced coma,
I pray, dear Lady,
that I return to my senses
first thing Friday morn,

And NOT set sail on a decade long
fat detour.

Amen.

Lucky Break

Do you believe that your wish will come true when you win the Wishbone Breaking contest? (I do.) Wishbone Breaking dates back to the Etruscans, 322 B.C. However, they used the hen's wishbones, not the turkey's.

Some 2,400 years ago, if someone wanted an egg, they waited for the hen to announce its coming. The Etruscans believed that the hen and cock were mystical creatures. The hen prophesized the laying of an egg with a squawk, and the cock announced a new day with a crow! This belief led to the 'hen oracles.'

If you needed an answer to an important question from the 'hen oracles,' you would draw a circle on the ground; divide it into 24 sections (representing the letters of the alphabet). You would then place grains of corn into each section. The hen was led into the circle and set free. She would peck away at the corn kernels and spell out words or symbols and the town's high priest would interpret the findings.

After you found out - let's say - what the name of your future life-partner might be, the hen was sacrificed to a special deity (NOT Our Lady of Weight Loss), and her collarbone was left out to dry.

Once dry, you would then make a wish on the bone. Then two other people got a chance to make a wish by snapping the dried bone just like we do with the turkey wishbone. The person with the larger end of the bone was the winner and their wish was sure to come true. This is where the expression 'lucky break' comes from.

The Romans took many of the Etruscan customs as their own, so when they conquered England, they brought with them the wishbone tradition. When the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock and discovered that the northeastern woods of North America were filled with turkeys, they changed the custom to turkeys!

Happy Thanksgiving and may all your wishes come true.

Note: The Breaking of the Wishbone is a non-eating Thanksgiving activity.

Tip on how to create a Lucky Break: Place your thumb higher up on your half than your opponent's on the wishbone and give a quick snap.

Righteous Recipe ~ Sweet Potato Banana Casserole

4 large sweet potatoes
1 tablespoon butter
1 cup low-fat chicken soup
(the soups that come in cartons are mighty tasty and low in fat, too)
Salt and pepper (to taste)
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
2 large bananas, thinly sliced
1/2 cup light brown sugar (1/4 cup for potato mixture; 1/4 to sprinkle on top).

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Bake sweet potatoes for approx. 1 hour, until tender.
Remove from oven Leave the oven ON.
Let them cool down, so that they are NOT too hot to handle.
Peel and mash sweet potatoes until smooth. Stir in the butter, stock,
salt, pepper, cinnamon & 1/4 cup light sugar.
Transfer to a casserole dish. Cover the surface of the potatoes with the banana slices by laying them on top, slightly overlapping.
Sprinkle the brown sugar evenly over the top.
Bake for 20 minutes or until the banana top is brown.

Want to whip up another dish? This way to Righteous Recipes past.
Send Our Lady your favorite recipe? Keep them easy, low-cal and FUN. If yours is used, Our Lady will send you a prize!
