THANKSGIVING is near. Starting praying now!

According to a study from Yale University, entitled “First Impressions and Hair Impressions,” your hair style creates an immediate and long-lasting impression.

To make the most of your hair, you need to ‘understand’ it.

What is hair?
Hair is more or less a waste product that is eliminated from under the skin. It is made up of a protein called keratin (which is also responsible for the elasticity of fingernails).

Only a healthy head produces healthy hair.

What to do?
The first step is to start loading up on foods that are heavy in the B vitamins, as well as a dash of A, C and the Omegas!

Here is a list of some foods that you might want to incorporate into your menu:

For hair pigmentation be sure to eat fatty fish like salmon and sardines, chicken, turkey, eggs, and soy foods.  They are rich in tyrosine, an amino acid.

For normal growth, try adding cooked clams and fortified breakfast cereals to your menu. They are good sources of vitamin B12, and foods like bananas, whole grains, and fish; and folic acid-rich foods including spinach and orange juice are rich in vitamin B6.  These B’s help in the formation of red blood cells, which carry oxygen to the hair.

To maintain a healthy scalp and healthy hair be sure to include milk and eggs, rich in Vitamin A, in your diet.

To avoid hair breakage, try one cup of broccoli and/or a cup of orange juice on a regular basis, both good sources of Vitamin C.

The second step is to get yourself a good stylist!

The Art of Weight Loss Group - As we enter the holiday season a.k.a. the food season, join with me in creative acts of Weight Loss Art.

The Halloween candy is beginning to get to me. Not only are there piles of it in every store, but it seems there are children in our building who may ring our bell and expect a sweet or two. I've had to stock my house with candy. Outrageous!!!

How to combat this Halloween haunting? I've been crocheting cupcakes. This one is a prize winner, for sure!

Let's form a group and make weight loss art together!

Righteous Recipe ~ This week's recipe - Lentil & Spinach Soup - is from Jeanne from Manhattan who has lost 25 pounds and has only 15 more to go! Thanks for the recipe, Jeanne, and keep it goin' girl. Three cheers for you!

5 cups chicken broth, divided. I find that refrigerating full-fat broth and
removing the fat gives better taste than using broth that comes fat-free
2 bay leaves
1 cup lentils, sorted to remove any stones
10 or so scallions, sliced
2-3 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 tsp cumin
1/4 tsp salt
1 8-9 oz package prewashed spinach
1 cup dry white wine

Cook the lentils at a fast simmer in 4 cups broth and the bay leaves until they are almost soft. While they are cooking saute the scallions until they just begin to wilt, then stir in the garlic and cook 1 minute. Set aside off the heat. When the lentils are ready add the scallions, garlic, cumin, salt, spinach, wine and remaining cup of broth. Simmer another 15 minutes.
Less than 1200 calories for the whole pot. Not that you'll eat the whole pot, even over the course of a day. It's too filling. It's also delicious and nutrient dense and the first thing I make when I feel a cold coming on.

Jeanne advises, "This is a good use for cheap, strong chardonnay. Just in case, you got burned on a bottle or just want to spend a couple of bucks!"

And Kathryn Compton, Editor in Chief of Herbs for Health and The Herb Companion magazines informs that we can freeze "Squashed Soop" (KICK #41 recipe).

Chewing the Fat
How you doin'? Write Our Lady.

Dear OLofWL, I'm still struggling with the weight gain thing.  I would just like to lose 10 pounds but just don't have the willpower anymore. Any suggestions?  ~ Mary Ellen, Pelican Lake, Wisconsin

Dear Mary Ellen, I really think it's more about WANTpower than WILLpower. Truthfully, I don't have much willpower. If cake is in the house, chances are I'm going to eat it. But my WANTpower is strong, and it enables to me to keep cake out of the house. It sounds like you are ambivalent. Perhaps you feel conflicted between short-term sacrifice and the long-term advantages. You want that cake now, but you want to lose weight (a longer process). You'll have to ask yourself what you really WANT. Could be you want to come to terms with not losing those 10 pounds, which is fine and better, in my opinion, than working against yourself. Inner conflict is exhausting. Hope that helps. ~ OLofWL

Dear OLofWL, Just want you to know that I am now down by 148 sticks of butter (37lbs.) Thanks for your inspiration and support! Love the KICK ~Deb, Main Street, USA

Dear Deb, Thanks for your email. I just love a good visual. Imagine piling up or carrying around 148 sticks of butter. Bravo, Deb! This stick of buttah is for you! Keep it up. ~ OLofWL
