Our Lady of Weight Loss Meets the USDA Dietary Guidelines

Be plain in dress, and sober in your diet; In short, my deary, kiss me, and be quiet.
~ Lady Mary Wortley Montagu (1689–1762);
A Summary of Lord Lyttelton’s Advice.

UNCLE SAM WANTS YOU (as well as your friends and family) to write him.
BE POLITICAL: EAT HEALTHY - Read this KICK,write to HHS Secy. Thompson and forward it!

FATOID
Approximately one-quarter of corn and one-half of soybeans in the U.S. are genetically modified.

Every five years, the Health and Human Services Department, along with the Department of Agriculture,
gives the USDA dietary guidelines a face-lift.  The 2005 guidelines will be released early next year.

However, the Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee – a hand-picked group of folks
who provide the scientific information for the food pyramid – released their findings last week.

HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson and Agriculture Secretary Ann M. Veneman want to know what you think.  They said, “We encourage the public to submit comments that will help HHS and USDA translate these recommendations into meaningful policies and messages for Americans."  (contact information below)

August-September 2004
An Interview: Janice Taylor

The Committee consolidated their findings into nine bullet points:

Dietary Guidelines :

1.Consume a variety of foods within and among the basic food groups while staying within energy needs.
2. Control calorie intake to manage body weight.
3. Be physically active every day.
4. Increase daily intake of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and nonfat or low-fat milk and milk products.
5. Choose fats wisely for good health.
6. Choose carbohydrates wisely for good health.
7. Choose and prepare foods with little salt.
8. If you drink alcoholic beverages, do so in moderation.
9. Keep food safe to eat.

A few specific recommendations were made as well which included:

  • Cut back on consumption of refined carbohydrates such as sugar and white flour and eat three 3-ounce servings of whole grains a day.
  • Increase the servings of fruits and vegetables each adult eats from five to nine servings per day to five to thirteen (5 - 13).
  • Eat two servings of fish a week to get enough omega-3 fatty acids, which protect the heart.
  • Increase exercise - at least 30 minutes a day of moderate physical exercise to stay healthy, and at least 60 minutes a day to lose weight.
  • Consider a moderate diet to include a mix of dairy products and protein, and a reduction of sugar, fats and salt.
  • Pay attention to portion size (calories do count, after all)!

Five years ago, the same invitation was extended to the American public to express their thoughts about the Committee’s 2000 findings. 435 people submitted their comments from a country whose population is over 290,000,000.

Here is an opportunity for you to SPEAK UP - a chance to help the HHS and USDA "translate these recommendations into meaningful policies and messages for Americans." WHAT ARE YOUR CONCERNS? How often does the Secretary of Health & Human Services invite you to write him? Take him up on the offer. Tell your friends and family to write him. And send a copy to Our Lady, please.

Let's not allow another five years to go by without voicing our concern.

  • If you find their nine bullet points a bit vague and broad in scope, let them know.
  • If you are concerned about genetically modified foods and wonder why there are no labels on food indicating whether or not they have been genetically modified, ask.
  • If you are thinking, "Gee, what of the 5 to 13 servings per day of fruits and vegetables recommended should have or should NOT have been sprayed with pesticides?" then pass that thought along to the Departments of Health & Human Services and Agriculture.

WRITTEN COMMENTS must be submitted BY SEPTEMBER 27. Here's how to send a quick email and let Secretary Thompson and Secretary Veneman know that you are concerned.

To E-MAIL (click here) . http://www.health.gov/dietaryguidelines
or - send SNAIL Mail to: Kathryn McMurry, HHS Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, Office of Public Health and Science, Suite LL100, 1101 Wootton Parkway, Rockville, Md. 20852. To provide oral comments at the public meeting, you must pre-register by calling 240-453-8280 before 5 p.m. on Sept. 14. The meeting will be held at HHS (200 Independence Ave., SW, Washington, D.C.) on Sept. 21, beginning at 9 a.m. Individuals and organizations are encouraged to provide written comments by Monday, Sept. 27, or provide oral comments at a public meeting on Sept. 21.

Righteous Recipe ~Taste the Pyramid
I was googling around, looking for Pyramid Recipes - trying to keep with this week's theme, and I came across Pyramid Recipes. For you SMOOTHIE enthusiasts, there are a couple of recipes there, anticipating blender action. These are all ultra-simple recipes, are child-safe and can be prepared without hot, heavy, or sharp objects!

My favorite ~
DINOSAUR BONES
Wash and scrub celery.  Fill with chunky, all natural, peanut butter. (2 tablespoons of peanut butter equals one portion.)

Want to whip up another dish?
Send Our Lady your favorite recipe? Keep them easy, low-cal and FUN. If yours is used, Our Lady will send you a prize!

Fruitful Contest - FILL IN THE BLANK:
It is the one and only Wonder which does not require a description by early historians and poets. It is the one and only Wonder that does not need speculations concerning its appearance, size, and shape. It is the oldest, yet it is the only surviving of the Seven Ancient Wonders. It is the Great Pyramid of _______.

Last week's Fruitful query: "You say tomato, and I say tomahto. Tomato, Tomahto ... " are lyrics from what Ira Gershwin song that was recorded in 1937 by Fred Astaire for the movie, "Shall We Dance?"

Congratulations to Kyle, Atlanta, Georgia. "Let's Call The Whole Thing Off" is the correct answer. Hope you received your prayer cards prize and are prayin' the pounds away.
