Did you take your antioxidant supplements today, hoping to prevent or possibly treat heart disease?
According to an American Heart Association Science Advisory published in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association, antioxidant supplements do not help.
FATOID
Almost every 29 seconds
an American will suffer a coronary event,
and almost every 60 seconds, someone dies from one.
|
Dr. Perry Kris-Etherton, principal author of the report said, “At this time, there is little reason to advise
that individuals take antioxidant supplements to reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease.”
The AHA Science Advisory studied 20 reports that included antioxidant vitamins, such as vitamins C, E and beta-carotene. For the most part, the supplements were not only found to be without benefit, but several reports showed that the supplements showed a harmful or negative effect.
To reduce the risk of Cardio-Vascular Disease, scientific evidence supports a diet high in antioxidants and other heart-protecting nutrients.
The recommendation: Eat foods that contain antioxidant vitamins such as fruit and vegetables that are associated with decreased risk of cardiovascular diseases. Maximum concentrations of antioxidants are found in the most deeply or brightly colored fruits and vegetables, such as spinach, carrots, red bell peppers, and tomatoes.

Righteous Recipe ~ SMOOTHIE SENSATION - I had no idea that smoothies would be such a sensation.
Here's another fabulous variation on the theme (see KICKs #32 & #33) from Kathryn Compton, Lawrence, Kansas. Not only YUM-easy and delicious, but smart, healthy and funny too!
Thanks, Kathryn! Glad to see that your morning cup of java comes first!
"My smoothie recipe is similar to Amilah's and creates a nice frosty drink for summer mornings. I start just about every week day with one of these lovelies:
Whenever I buy bananas, I cut several in half and stick in the freezer. The skins turn black, but I don't make that mean anything. I keep on hand, always, a couple of bags of frozen organic strawberries, blueberries and mixed berries.
I keep on hand, always, a bottle of carrot/orange juice, blueberry juice and grape or pineapple juice. And also a batch of low-fat or non-fat yogurt. I make sure to buy yogurt that has the actual good organisms in it -- meaning none of that stuff with gelatin in it and usually no store or major brands because they're so processed the bugs have all been destroyed.
And, if I'm feeling especially motivated, I also have some powdered green stuff with super blue-green algae in it that I'll add for extra energy. I have no proof that this stuff actually works, but what the heck.
Here's the drill:
€ Stumble into the kitchen in the a.m.
€ Start the coffee pot.
€ Pull out a bag or two of berries and put a half cup or so of them in the blender.
€ Take one of the frozen black bananas out; peel the skin and cut the nana into small chunks in the blender.
€ Pour in a cup or so of one or two of the juices -- all of 'em if I'm feeling extravagant --
in any combination that makes me happy that day.
€ Hit the "chop ice" button on the blender until the chunks o' froot are smoothed out.
€ Now, hit the "blend" button and let it be blending while you scoop three or four glops of yogurt in the hole in the top.
€ Drizzle a teaspoon or so of local, organic honey in if your sweet tooth is twitching.
€ Pour it in a go-cup, grab a cup of coffee and go do something about your makeup while you drink nutrition and caffeine.
€ Check mirror for smoothie-stache. |
The reason I make certain everything is organic is that some recent research is showing that the pesticides and fertilizers in much of our food actually cause our metabolism to slow down, which means that every morsel becomes that much easier to convert to fat. The compounds are the same the livestock industry feeds cattle, pigs and poultry to fatten them up. Nice. Also because, as I understand it, many of the chemicals in fertilizers and pesticides have estrogen-producing effects, which also cause our bodies to convert food more readily into fat than muscle. Who needs THAT?
Bon appetit!"

Last week's Fruitful query: What company was the first producer of corn syrup in the country? (Not to be confused with HFCS.)
Hint: Back in the early 1900's, a good appetite was necessary if you wanted a longer lifespan.
Scrawny folk had a harder time warding off illness.
Well folks, there was no winner. Jolene from Newport Beach was on the right track, but you know how the saying goes.
Close, but no cigar.
The answer: Karo syrup (corn syrup) was originally promoted in 1905 as, "An appetizer that makes you eat."

Dear OLofWL,
I love what you had to say about high fructose corn syrup! I have been a
label reader for a few years now. It is like foraging for nuts and berries
in the forest to find food that is real and good for you. A nutritionist
told me a long time ago that I should watch out for high fructose corn
syrup. After all, cattle that naturally eat grasses are sent to feed lots
and fed CORN for a few months to get fattened up. Don't let large food
corporations pull the wool over your eyes. Be suspicious of food trends.
Know the difference between what is good pure unprocessed food and what big
advertising dollars are shoving down your throat. They spend big bucks to
find out how to manipulate people. Eat organic fruits and vegetables,
they're good for you and have stood the test of time. It's the way we were
meant to eat.
Keep on kicking those tushes! ~ Mr. Bakery, Camp Meeker, California.
Dear Mr. Bakery, No kidding! It sure does get more and more difficult to find something that is okay to eat. You put forth a solid case for reading labels. And you raised a good point. What were we meant to eat? Thanks for your thoughtful email and for giving us something to think about. ~ OLofWL

Dear OLofWL, So glad you've written about this (HFCS). I flew back from a wonderful week in Maine yesterday and had cranberry/apple juice on the plane. Checked the ingredients on the back of the can. The first two listed were water and corn syrup. Cranberry was way down on the list. I am going back to water when I fly. ~ Mary Margaret, Houston, TX
Dear Mary Margaret, I've been reading labels all week long and keep telling anyone who will listen to me that they should at least know what they are ingesting. More to come on that topic, to be sure! Thanks so much for writing. ~ OLofWL
