Our Lady of High Moral Fiber
I am an invisible man....
I am a man of substance, of flesh and bone, fiber and liquids—
and I might even be said to possess a mind.
I am invisible, understand, simply because people refuse to see me.
Ralph Ellison (b. 1914), U.S. author. The narrator, in The Invisible Man, prologue (1952).

Fiber-rich foods can help you lose weight because they are low in calories, take a long time to chew and make you feel full faster. Studies show that eating a diet rich in fiber will also keep your digestive system running smoothly and lower risk of heart disease and certain cancers.
There are two types of dietary fiber: soluble and insoluble.
Soluble fiber dissolves in fluids found in the large intestine and forms a gel.
Soluble fiber such as legumes, oaks, barley, fruit, and psyllium seed (i.e. Metamucil):
- can lower cholesterol levels as it binds intestinal bile acids that contain fat and cholesterol, which are eliminated in the stool rather than being reabsorbed into the bloodstream,
- may also lessen the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and other digestive problems by helping to
regulate both constipation and diarrhea,
- slows the absorption of simple sugars, which helps control the rise in blood sugar after eating, &
- may help lower blood sugar and blood cholesterol levels.
Insoluble fiber soaks up water like a sponge, adding bulk, making it easier for the intestines to eliminate waste matter quickly.

Insoluble fiber such as whole grains, wheat bran and some fruits and vegetables:
-
can help prevent diverticulosis (formation of pouches in the colon or large intestine),
-
can help prevent hemorrhoids and possibly colon cancer, &
-
can help you lose weight or maintain weight loss.
Most people should aim for 20 to 35 grams of fiber per day.
Here are some suggestions on how to increase your daily fiber.

Fruitful Contest
New rules: The THIRD to enlighten
Our Lady wins a 5-pack of GloriousGreetings.
What great American (male) inventor, born in Boston on January 17, 1706, stuffed with high moral fiber, said, "Fish and visitors smell in three days?"

Last week's Fruitful query:
TRUE OR FALSE: Snoring is not harmful as long as it doesn't disturb others or wake you up.
FALSE! Whether you wake someone up or not, snoring may indicate the presence of a life-threatening sleep disorder called sleep apnea. People with this disorder snore loudly, gasp for breath while sleeping, and awake repeatedly during the night . This lack of restful sleep causes severe daytime sleepiness, which raises the risk for accidents and heart problems. 95% of those with sleep apnea don't realize that they have a serious disorder. Physicians and sleep specialists should be consulted.
Kudos to Pace Taylor from Brooklyn, NY. You were the first to enlighten Our Lady. Your 5 pack of GloriousGreetings is in the mail!

Dear OLofWL,
Please enroll me in your KICK in the TUSH. Please be gentle as
my tush
is sensitive from squeezing my glutes at the gym. I did 6 pull ups
the
other day and although there were only 5 people in the gym at the time,
everybody stopped what they were doing and were cheering me on. It
was such
an awesome supported feeling. I would also like to point out that I have to
reach all the way up while standing on my toes to even reach the pull
up
bar. Even as recently as 3 months ago I would not have thought this
possible.
My next goal is to get my bicycle fixed and be able to ride my five
mile
morning walk. I'll keep you posted. I am putting your
website in my favorites. ~
Steve E., Petaluma, CA
Dear Steve E. ~ Thanks much for the delightful e-mail. Not only did it make me laugh - it sent me hiking! I hope others will be inspired by your note. We all need to cheer each other on. Go STEVE-E; Go STEVE-E; GO!!! In fact, you've inspired me to set up The Our Lady Cheerleaders (see below). Looking forward to your next email! ~ OLofWL

Dear OLofWL,
I am a 53-year-old Menopausal Woman who has been fighting my weight since my mid forties. Menopause is horrible and after I lost 30 pounds 2 years ago, I have not gained it back after going on Estrogen. I have joined CURVES and that helps, but I need that KICK IN THE TUSH. I need your help. ~
Sophia in the Desert, Tempe, Arizona
Dear Sophia in the Desert, It seems that menopause is one odd baby. I'm glad that you found a way to deal with it. I did a bit of research and found an interesting article on The Better Health Channel: menopause info. Thanks much for writing and keep up the great work! ~ OLofWL
