YO! Yo-Yo'er*
According to research conducted at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, yo-yo dieting may weaken the immune system. The study found that among women who had repeatedly gained and lost weight, the function of the natural killer cell (to attack viruses and cancers) dropped by 30 percent. These immune cells are apart of the body’s complex defense against illness and infection.
FATOID
When asked,
"How many years of your life would you trade to be at your ideal weight?", 15% of women and 11% of men say they'd sacrifice 5 years.
(Source: The Psychology Today Survey, based on 4,000 replies) |
In addition, a study conducted at the University of Michigan found that yo-yo dieting, also known as ‘weight-cycling,’ reduced blood flow to the heart. Yo-Yo dieting may also lead to decreased bone mass.
And let's not forget how truly depressing and demoralizing it is to gain it back - again.
To reduce your chances of becoming a Yo-Yo Dieter:
- Avoid fad diets and quick weight loss schemes.
- Do not take diet pills or fat burners.
- Create and follow a sensible diet plan, which includes some of your favorite foods.
- Weigh yourself once a week. Don't let those pounds creep back on.
And listen to Our Lady of Weight Loss. “It's okay to let an extra pound or two visit, but you can’t let them move back in.”
*Yo-Yo'er is someone who loses and gains ten pounds or more over and over again.

Righteous Recipe
Queen of Kale, Mary Margaret Hansen of Houston, sends us the following CRISPY KALE recipe. Thanks, MMH, sounds yummy.
Dark green kale has more nutrients than almost any
other vegetable.
Good way to eat an entire bunch of it is to tear it in bite
size pieces and put on a cookie sheet.
Spray with good olive oil or PAM.
Dust with parmesan cheese and put under broiler for a very short time until
crisp.
I eat all those vitamins right off the tray by the stove.
It never gets to the table. Feels absolutely virtuous.

Dear OLofWL, I'm pregnant and eating for two. I don't know where to draw the line. Any advice? Thanks. ~ JerseyGirl Times Two
Dear JerseyGirl Times Two, Congratulations! Just to be clear - the phrase "eating for two" is about you and the baby, not two of you. I can understand your concern about eating too little. Yes, it's important to nourish the growing baby. But to what degree? How much is the right amount to gain during pregnancy? The Huddings University in Stockholm studied over 2,000 Swedish women and put the amount around 35 pounds. It goes without saying (but I'll say it anyway) that each person and pregnancy is different and you sure to do want to check with your doctor. In the meantime, here's a link to Pregnancy-Info.net. Thanks for writing, and all good things to you and your family! ~ OLofWL
