Our Lady of One Foot in Front of the Other

Walking around in the park
Should feel better than work:
The lake, the sunshine,
The grass to lie on....
~ Philip Larkin (1922–1986), British poet. “Toads Revisited.”

FATOID

Walking an extra 20 minutes each day will burn off 7 pounds of body fat per year.

The Benefits of Walking -

From stress reduction to less incidence of cancer, heart disease, stroke and diabetes, the benefits of walking are amazing! Some even say walking relieves constipation and helps cure impotence!

Walking stimulates the brain to release endorphins and increases the production of the neurotransmitter serotonin, the body’s natural mood elevator. Walking makes us happy.

Richard Carmona, U.S. Surgeon General, advises, "Walking is the biggest bang for our buck. Thirty minutes a day of walking will prevent many cases of diabetes, hypertension, and other chronic diseases. Walking is the simplest, easiest way for most people."

And Secretary of Health and Human Services Tommy Thompson, logs in 10,000 steps a day on his pedometer.
Even Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence and third President of the United States, believed that "of all exercises, walking is the best."

It seems our patriotic duty is to walk!

Here are a few ideas from Our Lady of Weight Loss on how to increase your daily steps:

    • Get off the bus or subway one stop earlier than usual.
    • Park your car at the far end of the mall.
    • Dust and/or vacuum your home during commercials. (Especially the food commercials.)
    • Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
    • Get up and go visit co-workers. Don't use intercom or email.
    • Pick up lunch instead of ordering out.
    • Walk your neighbors dog! (He'll like you for it!)

    Wear a pedometer!!!
It will keep you honest, and you can compete against yourself daily!

How many calories are you burning while you're walking?
    It's based on your speed.

    3.0 miles/hour (20-minute mile): Burns .027 calories/pound/minute.

    3.5 miles/hour (17 minute mile): Burns .033 calories/pound/minute.

    4.0 miles/hour (15 minute mile): Burns .042 calories/pound/minute.

    4.5 miles/hour (13 minute mile): Burns .047 calories/pound/minute.

Take the number of calories/pound/minute you burn and multiply it by your weight and then by the number of minutes you walk.

For example, if you weigh 150 pounds and walk a 20-minute mile for 60 minutes, you multiply 150 by .027, then multiple the result (4.5) by 60. You burn 270 calories.

Chewing the Fat ~ How you doin'? Write Our Lady.

Dear OLofWL, I enjoy your newsletter a great deal and am thrilled for more evidence to support my jones for dark chocolate, which I satisfy at every rational opportunity. I also am an evangelist about it. My favorites are the Dove dark chocolate bite-sized pieces, which I call Antioxidant Drops and tell everyone are strictly medicinal. I even have co-workers dropping by to see if I have any Antioxidant Drops. I feel sort of like the chocolate curandera, dispensing health by the morsel. In fact, I wish I had some right now. Have you noticed, once you get used to the rich taste of dark chocolate, other forms of chocolate taste weak and adulterated?~ Kathryn in Kansas

Dear Kathryn in Kansas, Always happy to support a jones of any kind. And, yes, I agree - dark chocolate is best - in moderation! Thanks for writing. ~ OLofWL
