Motivational Musings
A Platter Full of Thanks
The average Thanksgiving spread weighs-in at approximately 3,500 calories. In other words, you could gain a full pound from this one meal.
What to do? ~ Enjoy!
Thanksgivings comes but once a year - absolutely - enjoy! - but it's best to practice a modicum of self-control. You'll be happier the day after - believe me!
THANKSGIVING TIPS ~
Don't starve yourself before the big meal. Have some breakfast and/or lunch, otherwise you're likely to go all out hog.
Create a spectacular
crudité and/or fruit platter, so there is something you can eat in bulk.
Drink two or three glasses of water before the feast begins.
Revisit your cookbooks. We no longer live in the fat-filled dark ages. There are a multitude of delicious healthy choices.
A fun sugar free Jell-O mold is always a good idea. It's next to no calories and it shimmers and shakes. A good reminder of how you do not want your bottom to shimmer or shake as you move about the room!
KEEP YOUR HANDS and MINDS BUSY! If your family is stressing you out, or the visual of all that food is getting to you, get busy. Instead of taking comfort in food bring your crocheting, knitting, needlepoint.
There seems to be a connection between keeping your hands busy and losing weight. If you are crocheting, it's difficult to eat, and it occupies your mind.
Toss a 1,000 piece jig-saw puzzle on a side table. Get others involved.
Bring your camera and document the event. Get some fun candid shots.
EXERCISE ~ Working out before your meal will suppress your appetite and boost your metabolism.
Organize a group walk.

How you doin'? Write Our Lady
Dear OLofWL, Someone very close to me is quite overweight, and each and every time I see her she's gained a bit more. It is a sore topic, and I am afraid to bring it up. I fear she will be angry at me, and I do not want to jeopardize my relationship with her. I do come from a place of love and concern. What advice do you offer? How can I help her? ~ Concerned, Loving but Afraid

Forgive me, for I have sinned.
I am a secret eater (a.k.a. closet eater). I'm on my best behavior
when I'm in someone else's house.
When I'm at home I relax and... well, you know.
I pray for holiday invites.

Dear Concerned, Loving but Afraid, My guess is that your loved one is well aware of the fact that she is gaining weight and is more than likely unhappy about it. If she is not receptive to your words, then there's not much you can do - except this. Embrace her the way she is. Before Our Lady of Weight Loss entered my life, and I permanently removed 50 pounds of excess weight, I was highly sensitive to the topic. If someone mentioned my weight decades of hurt surfaced, and my thoughts about the person were less than kind. It made me feel that there was something wrong with me. I felt judged. Love and acceptance is healing. ~ OLofWL
TO KICK Members ... What is your experience? Do you have any advice for "Concerned, Loving but Afraid?" I'd LOVE to hear it. It's a question that comes up every so often, and I wish there was an easy answer. Has anyone ever said anything that was helpful to you? Or hurtful? Let me know! Thanks! ~OLofWL

Dear OLofWL, I'd been doing well--lost 10 pounds by cutting out sweets and adding workouts at Curves. Then my dad broke his hip and between hospital food, stress, lack of sleep, I've added back most of the 10 I'd lost. I think part of the problem is that everyone tells me, "You're not that big," but I'm bigger than I want to be.
Dear Charlene from Arkansas, Ten pounds gained, whether you're still not that big, is still ten pounds gained. If you want to lose it or uncomfortable carrying it around, why even discuss it with others? Just do what feels right to you. It's your body. It's your life! Hope your dad is doing well. ~ OLofWL
