Oats - Exfoliate, Ingest or Sow?
"Marzidoats and dozidoats and little lamzidivie,
A kiddeldie divey too, wouldn't you?"
History: As long ago as 7,000 B.C. - in ancient China - man was cultivating his oats (not sowing them).
The ancient Greeks were the first people known to have cooked up a bowl of porridge (cereal) from oats. In 1602, a sea captain planted oats on one of the islands off the coast of Massachusetts, thus introducing oats to the Americas.
Today, nearly half of the world's oat crop--more than 4 billion bushels a year--is grown in the United States and Canada.
Health:
Oatmeal is a product made by processing oats. It is a whole grain, and its health benefits are many.
Studies conducted over the past forty years demonstrate that ingesting 3g of soluble fiber daily from oatmeal, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease.
There are a number of heart healthy components at play in oatmeal, including soluble fiber, beta-glucan and antioxidants. They reduce cholesterol by reducing the ability of blood cells to stick inside the artery walls, which in effect stops plaque from forming. (When plaque forms, the diameter of the blood vessels narrow and increases the risk of cardiovascular disease.)
Rolled vs. Steel:
Rolled oats a.k.a. old-fashioned oatmeal are oat groats that are steamed, rolled, and flaked so that they cook quickly. They're often cooked as a breakfast cereal, added raw to granola or muesli mixes, or used to make oatmeal cookies. Regular rolled oats take about five minutes to cook. If you're in a hurry, try quick oats or instant oats. These have thinner flakes, so they cook faster.
Steel-cut oats a.k.a. Irish oatmeal and Scotch oatmeal are groats that have been chopped into small pieces. They're chewier than rolled oats, and grain aficionados often prefer them for hot oatmeal cereals and muesli. (Our Lady is a big fan of steel oats as is Oprah!)
So, yes, oatmeal for breakfast – a fabulous and smart heart healthy choice.
Exfoliate:
But – did you know that oatmeal is a very soothing grain for the skin?! Those who suffer from psoriasis and eczema appear to find some relief from itching, pain and redness, and oatmeal makes for a great exfoliate.
Exfoliates are materials with irregular textures that are used to release debris which collect on the skin’s surface. Sometimes oatmeal is mixed in with our soaps, adding texture. The grainy lather removes dirt and dead skin as it stimulates our healthy cells.
Our sweat glands and sebaceous glands rid our bodies of waste and toxins through the skin. External pollutants also get trapped on the skin’s surface. (Not a pretty thought.) So lather up, exfoliate and cleanse on a regular basis.

Pious Project™ - Exfoliation Soap - Fun, easy and a great gift! Very gratifying and satiating.
Ingredients: Soap,
Oatmeal,
Water
Directions: Grind up the oatmeal in a food processor, hand chopper or blender until finely milled. The mixture should have some substance, so don't reduce it to flour - but chop enough to break up most of the individual oat flakes.
Grate a small bar of soap into small slivers in a large, microwavable bowl. Add a couple of tablespoons of water and microwave on high for 2 to 3 minutes. If you need to add a couple more tablespoons and microwave a couple of more minutes - so be it! Just keep an eye on it. You don't want it to bubble over. Soap all over the microwave is not a lot of fun!
Stir between minutes.
When the soap has dissolved, remove from the microwave and stir. Gradually add the oatmeal. Add the oatmeal gradually, mixing in with a spoon, until you happy with the consistency and the proportion of soap to oatmeal. Pour the soap into a mold and let cool to shape.

Dear OLofWL ~ You are brilliant! I was thumbing through an old Family Circle and came across an article about you and your website. I had to check it out. How absolutely fun, refreshing (without the calories), and informative. I am an doodler and have always wanted to put my work out there, but I have no idea how to start. Might you have any advice you could share? Seeing how quirky and special your works are really brightened my day. Thank you!!!! ~ Betzy the Doodler
Dear BetZy (love the 'Z') ~ Doodling is divine. Get a pile of paper, and doodle on each and every page until it is completely filled. Black on white; white on black! - color pens, pencils, anything that your doodlin' heart desires. Don't edit yourself. Just keep on going, and I guarantee by the time you've doodled your way through the pages and your ink runs dry, you've got yourself a masterpiece, worthy of a frame. AND you will have been clear and free of food thoughts for hours and hours. Ahhhh, the relief. Feel free to send your doodlin' works in and we'll post them. And thanks for your 'brilliant' comment. Even Our Lady can use an ego boost once in a while!!! ~ OLofWL

Forgive me, for I have sinned.
I cut a sliver of cake. It wasn't a neat cut, rather quite jaggedy.
I thought I'd 'clean' it up by cutting another small sliver - this time - a straight cut, leaving clean edges.
I cut. More jagged edges. Another sliver - jagged edges. Another sliver, and another and another.
The jagged edges are, at last, gone. As is the entire cake!
