Monks Bribe Locals With Holy-Doughy Treats
Monk-A-Licious!
The exact origin of the pretzel is not known, but it is believed that in 610 AD the monks at a monastery somewhere in Southern France or Northern Italy took the scraps of dough and transformed them into treats in the shape of a child’s arm folded in prayer. The three empty holes of this twisted temptress represented the Holy Trinity.
The monks used these scrumptiously holy-doughy treats to bribe the town’s children. If the kids memorized their bible verses and prayers, they would be given a pretiola! (Pretiola is the Latin name for little reward.)
On the Road
Yummy and anxious to please, the pretiola did a lot of traveling. It passed though the French and Italian wine country, up and down the Alps, through Austria and into Germany where it was called a Bretzel or Pretzel.
Pretzels were served on Easter with two hard-boiled eggs and were hidden on the farms for the children to find – much like an Easter egg hunt. And there was a time when Brides and Grooms would tug on the pretzel, like a wishbone. The newlywed who pulled the larger piece was assured that their spouse would fulfill their wishes!
The Pretzel shape came to represent good luck and prosperity as well as a reward.
Where are the origins of the present day pretzel?
As with so many fabulous discoveries, it was a happy accident!
In the late 17th century, a Pennsylvanian baker fell asleep while his pretzels baked in the hearth. When he woke up, he realized that the flames had died. He feared that his pretzels weren’t cooked long enough, so he tossed them aside - to be discarded. His boss, Mr. Master Baker (oh, that’s funny), came in and tasted one. Eureka!! The pretzels were delicious and this particular baking process allowed the pretzels to remain moist.
Reward Thyself!
Low in fat and calories (as long as we adhere to a single serving), the pretzel is a fair treat for us modern day health enthusiasts.

Pious Project™ -TapeMeasure Bracelet -
If you've got a tape measure lying around the house and the thought of wrapping it around your waist, hips or thighs is just too overwhelming, why not make a groovy, funky, fun bracelet out of it?!
Supplies: One tape measure (color of your choice, although the red with red nail polish makes a lovely combo).
Black elastic thread.
One needle with eye that is large enough to get the elastic thread through.
Instructions:
Thread your needle with the black elastic thread. Place needle at the 1/2 inch mark and go through, then loop the tape measure to the left and put the needle through at the 1.5 mark (you are putting the needle through at the 2.5, 3.5, 4.5 - inch mark). Then to the right - putting the needle through at the next 1/2 inch mark. Keep zig zagging back and forth so the bracelet looks much like a ruffled collar. The needle is going through in the middle of the bracelet, not at the ends. When you get to the end of the tape measure, tie a knot, cut elastic. Tie ends together. The bracelet slips on and off, given its elasticity.
Special thanks to our very talented hand model, Abby.

Dear OLofWL, My name is Kimberly Craig. I am 23 years old, and I am at least 50 lbs. overweight. I love the Our Lady of Weight Loss newsletters! I lost 20 lbs going to Weight Watchers last year but decided to try on my own (for financial reasons) and have managed to gain it all back. I am lost, confused, discouraged, disorganized and starting to feel like i will just be fat forever. I have a membership to workout and manage to go at least once a week but hardly ever the three times or more that I need to. I have a very wonderful boyfriend who dearly loves every pound of me and isn't much help when it comes to accountability. He is also at least 50 lbs overweight. I guess my question is: where do i begin? My boyfriend says that he will try to help because he knows how important this is to me but when it comes to dinner, he wants to go out. I try to make smart choices, but I am guessing that they are not smart enough. Do you have any suggestions on where I should go from here? You know what they say: the first step is admitting you have a problem. Thank you for any advice you can send my way!! Sincerely, Kimberly Craig
Dear Kimberly, Many of us have lost and gained more than once (twice or thrice). If you can experience your gain as part of the process rather than a failure, you'll be free to move forward. So - that's where you can begin. Since your boyfriend has offered his support, see if you can strike a deal. Perhaps you can go out to dinner once or twice a week and cook healthy meals together the rest of the week. (Let me know if you need some suggestions on how and what to order when out eating.) And if he happens to lose a couple of pounds, he may want to up the ante and journey to Sveltesville with you. And if you're guessing your choices aren't smart enough, my guess is that you're right. If in doubt, don't eat it. Read the labels, look up the calories and write it down. You know how to lose weight. It's a matter of doing it. Recommit to yourself every morning and check in with Our Lady of Weight Loss. We're rootin' for you. You're not alone. ~ OLofWL

Dear OLofWL,
Thanks so much for your works of art and encouragement. I have an art therapy background (which I have neglected for many years) and was drawn to your work, pardon the pun. Anyway, I have been really struggling lately and read your newsletter this morning and felt compelled to write.
I have lost about 60 pounds doing Weight Watchers which it sounds like you did that as well? Anyway recently gained about 19 of it back. Yikes. Last night did some journaling and drawing of my feelings. Mandala of my body image........ This morning got up early went to weigh in and start over!! Going biking with my daughter today.
Thanks for the inspiration!! ~ Kate Gilmore
Dear Kate, Yup, I lost 55 pounds 4 years ago! It's definitely a challenge to keep it off, but making art and writing is my salvation. Pat yourself on the back for keeping 41 of the 60 off and for getting back on the wagon. I love the idea of a mandala of your body image. Wow! Journaling, drawing, biking - 41 cheers for you! Please keep us in the loop. We want to know how it's going. ~ OLofWL
