Stop Your Whining

Here's some good summertime news.
A Harvard University study found that one glass of red wine a day may reduce heart attacks for women by 25%. And in some cases, those who drink wine have higher bone density, thus lessening the effects of osteoporosis.  Studies also show that wine helps you feel younger and may prolong your life.  (I’ll drink to that!)

Wine also aids in digestion, and both stimulates the appetite and helps fight anorexia and obesity.  Wine also battles neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.

What makes wine different than other alcoholic beverages?
Research shows that what differentiates the health benefits of wine from other alcoholic beverages is the significant presence of tannins and esocyanine, which are made up of polyphenols.  (Got that?)

Polyphenols are a substance found in many plants, flowers and vegetables that give it their color.  They also seem to stimulate antiviral and antibacterial reactions in the body and have a positive effect on the vascular system.

Psychologically, a well-timed glass of wine gives one the opportunity to stand back, kick back and relax.

Remember, that’s one glass of one per day – not the entire bottle of Thunderbird!  Moderate drinkers increase their chances of breast cancer.  Heavy drinkers are at risk for many medical conditions and are more likely to injure themselves.

You should most definitely discuss your family’s history with your doctor.  If anyone had or has breast cancer, a heart condition or is or was an alcoholic, danger! – red light ahead!

Righteous Recipe ~ Pious Peaches in Clairvoyant Coconuts

Ingredients:
4 large ripe peaches
1/2 cup sweet red wine**
2 tablespoons sugar
4 coconut halves -
optional but - oh, you've just go to go the extra mile.

Serve the peaches in the coconut halves.

Makes four servings.

Instructions:
You are going to boil water and then put the peaches in it, so use a pot that will hold enough water to cover the peaches. Got it?

Once the water boils, place the peaches in it. I'd say for approx. 30 seconds, then remove and let peaches cool. When they are cool, you can easily and miraculously slip off their fuzzy skin.

Slice the peaches. Add wine and sugar and refrigerate for a couple of hours.

** Be sure to cook with wine that you like. You only need 1/2 cup of wine for this recipe. Once I opened the bottle, made the above, I poured myself a glass, sat on the sofa and put my feet up. Ahhhhh.

Want to whip up another dish?
Send Our Lady your favorite recipe! Keep them easy, low-cal and FUN.

Dear OLofWL, I have a comment for fellow reader GoingDown4Good (last week's KICK).  She made the following comment, "now that I am within 5 pounds of my goal, I seem to have lost all self control. I gain and lose the same 5 pounds weekly".  I wanted to congratulate her on the fact that even though she keeps gaining 5 pounds, she at least was losing those 5 pounds again.  I think she is doing herself proud that she has not let those 5 pounds come back and STAY!!!!!  OLofWL had wonderful advice: instead of worrying over trying to loose the last 5 pounds to get to goal, then declare where you are at as your goal. I have actually done that with my goal.  I am actually 10 pounds away from goal (after losing 77 lbs.) and am getting to where I am quite happy with my body.  So if I loose more, GREAT, if I don't then I am content.  Since I have adopted a healthier way of eating then I am noticing the last pounds coming off, slowly, but coming off. ~ Connie

Dear Connie, Congratulations on your 77 lb. loss! If you live a healthy lifestyle, the pounds come off - slowly - but permanently. Bravo. You are right on target with your advice to GoingDown4Good. Thanks for responding to her call to all! ~OLofWL

Dear OLofWL: I read your story in Good Housekeeping in January. I bought the magazine because Julia Roberts picture was on the cover! And then I found your article. I was so surprised at how alike we are in some ways. Over the years, I also said on many occasions 'I'm not going to make it.' I weigh 230 lbs. - lost 10 lbs. since I read your article. Wish I had lost more. I would like to get my weight down to 150-170 lbs. A little hard to exercise because of arthritis in my legs. I notice since I lost 10 lbs. they feel a little better. I can now go on the treadmill but only for about 5-7 minutes. I might be interested in your weight loss meetings. I would appreciate any help and would like to be of help to someone else who is struggling. Thank you for your time. ~ Janis

Dear Janis, I am so grateful to Julia Roberts for leading you to the Kick in the Tush Club! Congratulations on your 10 lb. loss. It's a great start, and now that you are feeling a little better, yes, you can slowly but steadily increase your time on the treadmill, or walk outside! It's summer!! Fresh air is always good. Remember - slow, steady and healthy wins this race. It's about changing your lifestyle. Not about deprivation. If you would like to get a few of your friends together and start your own Kick in the Tush Club, you can! You can meet weekly, if you like, and toss around the current Kick. You know, 'tawk amongst yourselves.' For more info., check out this link: Kick in the Tush Club. Thanks for writing, and PLEASE, let us know how you are doing! We are rootin' for you! ~ OLofWL

Forgive me, for I have sinned.

I woke up in the middle of the night and headed straight to the kitchen. The refrigerator was just about bare, with the exception of a condiment or two. I was crazed and desperate. I ate two frozen hot dogs.
No, I didn't bother to cook them. (Don't worry, I'm seeking counseling.)
