A Penny to Change Your Thoughts

What is a Belief System?

A belief system is a series of ideas
that your mind has organized in order to project an image of what is ‘real.’  It encompasses everything you think about yourself, others and the world-at-large.  It is filled with should have’s and ought to’s.

These groups of thoughts (ideas) that we believe to be true come from and are formed through our interactions with others, such as our parents, friends, teachers, institutions, newspapers, television, etc.

Our beliefs are formed throughout our childhood, and generally acted out in adulthood without much thought or examination.  These 'systems' are mighty powerful, and they have a profound impact on the way in which we lead our lives.  Our beliefs tell us how to feel, behave, and they are the foundation from which we approach the world.

To change how we feel and how we act and react to situations, we must first understand what our core belief systems are and where they come from.

If we do not challenge our belief systems, they will remain unchanged.  You may find that some of your beliefs are empowering.  Great!  Keep those beliefs and build on them.  It’s the outdated and limiting beliefs that are in need of an overhaul!

Your belief about your ability to lose weight and keep it off strongly influences your internal dialogue, which in turn, strongly influences your choices.

Do you believe that you are in control of your weight loss? Or - Do you believe that some alien force has taken control and force fed you?

Do you believe that you can set realistic goals, measurable goals and achieve them, no matter what? Or - Do you believe that when things aren't going your way, when you're having a bad day, you're just gonna' have to eat?

Do you believe that you can lose weight and keep it off? Or - Do you believe all those photos of heavy relatives of yesterday determines your weight and size?

Do you believe that your past attempts at weight loss were learning experiences and those who are successful are often not successful the first time out? Or - Do you believe that your inability to lose and keep off those extra pounds is a sign of your being a loser (the 'bad' kind of loser) and that you are doomed?

Do you believe that you are really buying those cookies for the kids? (Oh, come on!)

What are your beliefs (not limited to weight loss)? What set of guiding principles do you believe to be true about yourself? Where or from whom did they come?  How can you change them and yourself?

Righteous Recipe ~ Mediterranean Pasta Salad - I threw this together the other night - and I mean threw it together. A last minute attempt at having a real dinner to sit down to - and low-in-behold - it was delicious. Everyone had third and fourth servings! No kidding. (Even me!!!)

Ingredients:
16 ozs. Rigatoni (whole wheat pasta, if you are so inclined)
12 pitted black olives, sliced
1 16 oz. can diced tomatoes (minus the liquid)
1 small red onion, chopped
1/4 cup parsley, minced
1/4 cup parmesan cheese
salt & pepper to taste (doesn't need much, if at all)

Instructions:
Cook pasta as directed on package, rinse and drain.
Add ingredients. Mix, toss, serve.

(Serve with mixed green salad.)

Want to whip up another dish?
Send Our Lady your favorite recipe! Keep them easy, low-cal and FUN.

Coffee Talk (lose the cake) Something to chew over (solo or with friends).
This Week's Topic ~ PROMISES Kept. Do you keep promises made to friends and colleagues? Most of the time, I bet. How about promises made to 'self.'Some of us (yeah, like me) promise ourselves that we'll walk more, drink more water, meditate, breathe... but do we? What stops us from keeping promises made to ourselves?

Dear OLofWL, My diet mind is a little confused.  I’ve gained almost 15 pounds since Christmas.  I don’t mind it, actually, which is wildly unusual for me, but I’d like to not gain anymore! I’m always conflicted about diets (or as Richard Simmons said, “live-its," because who wants to "die-it?"  To eat when you’re hungry and stop when your full, to eat small bits of everything you really like so you don’t feel deprived and binge, to love and enjoy food, to put food in a tiny place and fill up on life…. I’m tired of trying to be thin.  I think I’m just tired. ~ Melissa

Dear Melissa, You bet, trying to be thin is exhausting! You're best off not trying to be thin. How about truly getting into a healthy lifestyle? Plan one week of healthy living and see how it goes. Walk, breathe, enjoy and I can tell you from my own experience, If you primarily eat low-fat, low-cal foods (fruits, vegetables, grains), and concentrate of feeling good, you'll be hard pressed to gain weight. I promise you that being healthy is fun, exciting and gratifying. ~ OLofWL

* * *

Dear Friends, I feel the need to tell this to somebody. I am hoping those of you who are weight challenged will understand. I have had a successful run losing weight over the past year and one half. I was very dilligent and strict about losing weight, and I am delighted to say I lost 105 pounds. However (and this is the part that is making me crazy) - now that I am within 5 pounds of my goal, I seem to have lost all self control. I gain and lose the same 5 pounds weekly. This has been going on for a few months now. I am making myself crazy. Being really strict doesn't work anymore, and when I lighten up and allow myself a few treats I go crazy. How do I learn to find balance and maintain discipline for the long haul. I really don't want to gain the weight back. Thanks for your help. ~ GoingDown4Good

Dear GoingDown4Good, First and foremost, congratulations on losing 105 pounds! Major accomplishment!!!!! Are you giving yourself enough kudos for that?! There's no need to beat yourself up or go crazy over those last five pounds. In fact, I've got a question for you. How about calling your current weight your goal weight? When I was down to my last 10 pounds, it just wouldn't come off. I thought (after two months of torturing myself), why torture myself. Let me declare this a total victory. One year later, miraculously, I'd lost a couple of more pounds. So - Love thyself. Eat healthfully. Accept victory! ~ OLofWL PS: The difference between losing weight and maintenance is about an extra piece or two of fruit in the day. In other words, plan in a treat or two, but keep those 'red light' foods out of the house. What's your maintenance plan?

Forgive me, for I have sinned.

The day starts with the best of intentions. Yet, somewhere along the way things get out of hand, and I end the day with much more then I intended.

Current Exhibition: "Crochet Me to the Moon" by AbbyLyn from Harlem, New York.

AbbyLyn loves to crochet, "Crocheting keeps my hands, heart and mind busy. There's no room for thoughts about food, or otherwise. The repetitive motion, the texture and colors of the yarn, make me feel like I'm free as a bird, flying to the moon. 'They' say you should do what you love and the money will come. So, I am. And when someone purchases one of my crocheted pieces, my moon flight quickens and swirls - to the moon and back!"
