Motivational Musings
Take Two Aspirin and Call Me in the Morning
(We’ll tawk.)
There is a ton of evidence out there to support the notion of taking a good ole’ fashioned aspirin daily.
Clinical research shows that taking one baby aspirin a day (81 mgs.) lowers the possibility of your having a heart attack or stroke; lowers the risk of colon cancer, breast cancer and slows the progression of or may even prevent dementia, such as Alzheimer’s Disease.
Aspirin falls into a drug class called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs. It is one of the most studied drugs and has been used to reduce pain and inflammation for over 100 years. It’s been around so long, and so readily available that we tend not to believe that it is equally if not more effective than prescription drugs. We take Aspirin for granted! (Sorry, Aspirin.)
The benefits of taking aspirin are many and impressive. Nevertheless, they need to be weighed carefully. Before we all start poppin’ these babies, there are some risks. When we take aspirin, the level of stomach protection is decreased, and we're more likely to bleed. And this risk increases if you combine aspirin with other NSAIDs.You should be super careful if you have gastric problems or heartburn. Please talk to your health care provider/doctor.
The History of Aspirin:
We can thank Felix Hoffman, an employee of a German fabric-dyeing company known as Bayer, for Aspirin. In 1897, Hoffman sought a chemical to alleviate his father’s painful arthritis. He came across acetyl salicylic acid (ASA), produced by the company’s chemists but ignored. ASA helped Hoffman’s father enormously.
In 1900, the powder form of Aspirin was replaced by the tablet. It was available by prescription only and was used for headaches, colds, menstrual cramps and inflated nerves. In 1915, Aspirin became available in he United States as an over-the-counter medicine. It cost ten times more in the States than in Germany.
Bayer tried to extend its patent rights beyond the 1917 expiration date. However, World War I was ablazin', so the U.S. Justice Department declared Bayer’s U.S. property ‘enemy-owned’ and took it over. Aspirin, henceforth, was produced as an American product.

Righteous Recipe ~ Grilled Salmon Teriyaki

Ingredients:
4 salmon steaks (about 6 oz. each), skinned
1 cup light soy sauce(reduced salt, less you swell in the morning!)
1/3 cup sake (Japanese rice wine)
4 tablespoons granulated sugar
4 garlic cloves, minced
2 tablespoons grated ginger root
1/3 cup sesame oil
Eight 3-oz. servings.
|
Instructions:
Combine all the ingredients for the marinade in a small bowl and stir until the sugar dissolves.
Rinse salmon under cold running water and pat dry with paper towels. Divide each steak into 2 pieces by cutting along either side of the central bone and then discarding the bone. Place the salmon in a shallow glass or ceramic container and pour 1 cup of the marinade over the fish. Cover and refrigerate for 2 hours, turning the fish occasionally.
Let come to room temperature before cooking. Prepare grill. Remove the salmon from the marinade, reserving the marinade. Place the fish on an oiled grill rack.
Place the fish approximately 6 inches from the heat source. Turn once and brush with reserved marinade. Cook 3 to 5 minutes per side, depending on thickness.

From last week's Righteous Recipe, Linda R., Japan writes: A mango dessert I love is:
Puree one banana and half a mango, blend in about a cup and quarter of yogurt and a bit of sweetener if needed. Pour into four small bowls. Top with some chopped pistachios.
Eddie H., California writes: I'm glad you highlighted mangos. Just last night, I bought four (for a buck!) at the supermarket, and I like to have them with fat free yogurt in lieu of ice cream. Actually if you throw the mango slices and the yogurt in the freezer for a little while (without falling asleep or some similar form of neglect) you have a delicious iced dessert in a short while.

This Week's Topic ~ We disconnect in a number of ways. We live from our heads, not our hearts. We put our feelings aside. We numb out. We are ‘nice.’ We anesthetize ourselves with food. Rather than stuff our feelings down, let’s get in touch wih our feelings and find a more gratifying way to deal with them. Here are a few ways to do it. A walk in the park. Meditate. Be kind to yourself. Take in a few deep breaths. What works for you?

Dear OLofWL, I sometimes think I am beyond all help. I need to lose 100 lbs., and I have lost 50-60 lbs about ten times before. Imagine what that has done to my heart!! I have been this heavy since the birth of my daughter 13 years ago. I know exactly what to do. I just can't seem to do it. I pray, I scream, I swear, at myself. I have overcome life threatening illnesses with a determination to get well, yet I CAN'T STOP EATING. Any advise from anyone is very welcome. Thank you all... ~ Elizabeth
Dear Elizabeth, You CAN stop eating! There is always hope. You've just got to commit to the process and no matter how long it takes, stick with it. Don't think of the other times as failures. Learn from them. Every time you have a negative thought, replace it with a positive thought. Every time you tell yourself that you can't do it, say - Yes, I Can! Make healthy choices a lifestyle. Don't think of it as dieting. Diets don't work. But lifestyle changes do. Throw out all the crap you've probably got in your kitchen, and start a new. Not tomorrow. Right Now! This time is your time! ~ OLofWL

Dear OLofWL, A Bangladesh woman in my Japanese class came over to learn how to make Banana Bread. I told her that the fruit stand (truly just a stand and not a store) at the top of the hill had delicious mangoes for sale. She said she had bought one there and when it was cut open, it had a thin seed. She said that meant good luck for her that day. I really like your newsletter! ~ Linda in rural Japan
Dear Linda, We'll keep eye out for a thin pit in our mangoes. Who wouldn't appreciate a day filled with good luck! Thanks for the head's up. And keep us in the Japanese loop. Any cool recipes, more intriguing food facts? Send, please. ~ OLofWL

AbbyLyn loves to crochet, "Crocheting keeps my hands, heart and mind busy. There's no room for thoughts about food, or otherwise. The repetitive motion, the texture and colors of the yarn, make me feel like I'm free as a bird, flying to the moon. 'They' say you should do what you love and the money will come. So, I am. And when someone purchases one of my crocheted pieces, my moon flight quickens and swirls - to the moon and back!"
