Motivational Musings
Moonstruck
From prehistoric times through the present, the moon has always grabbed hold of our imagination. The moon was our first timekeeper. The Moon causes the ebb and flow of the tides; and because our bodies are 75% water, the moon also effects our emotions, moods, sleep patterns, and for women, our menstrual cycles.
The moon’s cycle lasts 28 days and through those 28 days the Moon appears to transform itself, from the tiny sliver of a New Moon to the glistening luminosity of the Full Moon (14 days later) and then slowly back into the Dark Moon to end the cycle.
The New Moon (the waxing moon) is a time associated with beginnings and growth. If you want to bring new things into your life, to start a new project, to start anew – a fresh start to your healthy food program, the New Moon phase presents a strong foundation on which to begin.
The Full Moon (the waning moon) presents a time of power. It is an excellent time to become aware of your negative thoughts. It is a time to overcome obstacles, to relinquish bad habits. It is a time of clearing.
New Moon / Full Moon Ritual –
A fun exercise that can bring awareness and intention to your life. (This month’s New Moon is Monday, June 6, and the Full Moon is Tuesday, June 21.)
There are two ways to perform this ritual. The simple way, and the deluxe version. The results will be the same. It’s all a matter of finding what works best for you.
The key to this exercise is this: A pen together with paper can prove a powerful life tool.
If you choose the simple way, you will simply need a pen and paper.
However, if you choose the full deluxe ritual, you will need the following:
Maroon, red, wine or orange colored paper
White, orange, maroon, red or wine pen or marker
One dark red or wine colored candle
One orange colored candle
Matches or lighter
A glass candle holder that holds both candles comfortably
Incense (your favorite scent)
Gemstone, such as Carnelian or Garnet (anything red)
Water or a candle snuffer
The simple way: On the day of the New Moon (any time that works for you) make a list of all things new that you want to bring into your life. There is no right or wrong way to do this. My New Moon list has covered everything from new glasses to a new home to a new point of view.
The deluxe version: Same as above, but you'll need to use the 'right' color pen and paper, along with candles, etc. Again, you should write out list of all things you want to bring into your life. After you complete your list, pick three that deeply resonate. And then, place your list under the plate that holds the candles, and with gemstone in hand, while candles and incense are burning, ask the universe for your three wishes.
"I ask the universe to bring hot, steamy, love into my life.”
"I ask the universe to bring large sums of cash into my life.”
“I ask the universe to bring a new gourmet deli to my block that stocks light bread.”
These are examples, of course, and you should create your own list. And be specific! (I added light bread to my last message. I better make sure this gourmet deli carries Our Lady approved products!)
Repeat the wishes out loud three times. Let the candles burn for as long as you are focused on your wishes. Do not blow them out. Either wet your fingers and pinch the flame out, or use a snuffer.
Keep your 'ritual kit' in a safe place. Save your list and when you write next month’s New Moon list, be sure to compare. You may find that your priorities have shifted or that some of your list has manifested.
The Full Moon ritual is basically the same, except this time, you want to make a list of everything you want out of your life. Again, there is no right or wrong way to do this. My list has ranged from ridding myself of bad hair days to illness.
“I ask the universe to rid me of bad hair days.”
It has been said that 75% of what we write down happens. I’m not sure if it’s pure magic or that when our desires come to light, our intention takes hold, and our actions change. Either way, change is a miraculous phenomenon that we are all capable of making happen.

Peggy H. from Pearland, TX writes: Here are a couple of tips for you on making Guacamole: Instead of cutting the avocado up on the cutting
board, cut it while it's still in the peel, then scoop
it out with your spoon. It's quick, easy, and no mess
to clean up! Also, if you'll put at least one avocado pit in the guacamole after it's made, it will help slow down the oxidation of the avocado. You generally don't have to
worry about someone accidentally eating it 'cause it's
so big. Try it -- it really works!
Darlene from St. Augustine, FL writes: Your guacamole recipe is righteous. To keep it green while you savor--dash it with a fresh l
lime. It
adds the perfect accent flavor AND keeps the avocado
from getting that old banana look.

Last week's Fruitful query: True or False: 1. Olive Oil is a good fat.
2. Avocado is a bad fat.
3. The fats you eat strongly influence your level of brain function. ANSWERS: True, False, True.
The winner's are: Jodi Ann R., Newport Beach, R.I. and Sarah N., Boston, MA
AnniePie writes: Regarding avocados and olives - both are vegetables so their oils should be good for us.
But don't over do it. An avocado is about 180 calories. And gram for gram all oils have the same calories whether they are good oils or bad oils.

Dear OLofWL,
I find it offensive saying "I do not want to be a fat American." It is offensive to other Americans who are heavy and have medical problems, and it is insensitive and shows prejudice. It would be appropriate and politically correct and unbiased to say "I DO NOT WANT TO BE A FAT PERSON"... also, if you leave it to being just an American that means others of different cultures feel it is ok to be "fat hispanics, Italians, French, etc.", including other cultures not from
America. Thank you. ~ Julia D., NYC
Dear Julia, Thanks for your thoughtful and thought provoking email! I get it. ~ OLofWL
Call for HELP: I would like to start a postcard art project and write NO THANK YOU, I AM ON A DIET in as many languages as possible. Can you all send in translations for: NO THANK YOU, I am on a diet! ~ Thank you. OLofWL

Nevertheless ... here are more translations for Cindy: I do not want to be a fat America!
Audrey from Madagascar writes: Malagasy is one of the official languages of Madagascar. French is the other
official language here. Mìla tsia mankiny misy Vazaha matavy manao aho.
Literally translated this says .. want not to be white person fat do I. I
suppose they translate American the same as the French, but "Vazaha" is what
they often shout out at us and it means white person.
KSP from Clinton, NJ writes ~
Hebrew: Ani lo rotza l'heeyot Americai shomena! Yiddish: Ich nisht hobn mir zayna Americana zaftig!
Sharon N. writes ~ German: Ich moechte kein fetter Amerikaner sein. Italian: Non voglio essere un' Americana grassa.
Norweigian: Jeg vil ikke være en feit amerikaner (you can replace "æ" with
"ae")
Polish: Nie chce byc Amerykanskim grubasem.
Swedish: Jag vill inte vara en fet Amerikan.
Anca L. from NYC writes ~ Romanian version: Nu vreau sa fiu o americana grasa!!! The word "grasa" has a little hat on top of it; like ) facing upward, or like a little smile.
I am full of anticipation; if Cindy will use any of my words I would feel like I was creative myself; what a treat!
MMF writes ~ French should read:
Je ne veux pas être un gros américain (masculine) or
Je ne veux pas être une grosse américaine.
Just small corrections, but god (or the devil) is in the details, right?
Laura P., our French chef writes ~ Je ne veux pas être une grosse américaine!

Dear OLofWL ~ A note on Flax. You can cook the seeds but you can't cook the oil- it loses its potency cooked. It also needs to be refrigerated, which the seeds don't.
Some oils taste much better than others- worth noting for first timers. If it tastes really bitter, it has probably gone rancid! ~ Jane T., Monclaire, NJ
Dear Jane, Thanks for the valuable info. ~ OLofWL
