Motivational Musings

Skin Me Five

The skin is our largest and most sensitive organ.  Each square inch contains 1,300 nerve endings.  It is an extension of our nervous system, and it can be directly affected by our thoughts and emotions.  Rashes, hives and eczema can occur during times of emotional distress.

Our skin is so sensitive that when we apply creams, lotions and skin products alike, they get absorbed by the pores and take a little voyage into the blood stream. We wouldn’t want any uninvited toxic substances entering our bodies, would we?

More label reading?  For sure.  But if you want to play it safe, here are five natural recipes for skin care.

1.  Turmeric & Cream: Mix one teaspoon of turmeric and two ounces of heavy cream (borrow from a neighbor, surely you don’t have heavy cream in your refrigerator!).  Apply to the skin with a facial sponge, rinse off. (Turmeric has natural antiseptic and antibiotic properties, so this recipe works against blemishes as well.)

2. Almond-Honey Scrub:  Mix two tablespoons crushed almonds and one tablespoon honey.  Gently rub on face.  Leave on for five minutes.  Rinse with warm water.

3. Cucumber Mask: Blend together one cubed cucumber and 3 ounces milk (whole, skim or otherwise).  Gently apply onto face.  Leave on for five minutes.  Rinse with warm water.

4. Yogurt Mud Pack:  Mix together 3 tablespoons fuller’s earth and 3 tablespoons plain yogurt into a paste.  Pat onto face with gentle, upward strokes.  Let dry for approx. 15 to 20 minutes . Rinse off with warm water.

5. Peel-Off Masque: Heat together 1 packet of unflavored gelatin and 1/2 cup natural apple juice. Let cool until almost set and then apply to face.  Let dry completely.  Then peel off!

For healthy skin, be sure to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, drink tons of water, get some sleep, smile and steer clear of direct sunlight.

Forgive me, for I have sinned.

I just ate TACOS for the first time in probably 15 years. I
had my dog Bob at work with me today and was trying to think of something I could eat that wouldn't involve leaving him in the hot car while I ran in the store. And some other people walked by my office talking about Taco Tuesday, so I went for it. But ... I feel like a grotesque now. ... Why did I do that? I don't even eat meat but about four times a year ... I'm polluted. I suck. Forgive me for I have sinned ...

Dear OLofWL, My husband has said no more junk food in the house. I thought I would just die without pretzels to snack on and that bowl of low fat ice cream every evening. Well, I did break down and bought ice cream, but I only had 3 medium bowls of it, and it was in one of those pails. The chips have been finished up by my two daughters and the last of the pretzels have been downed by me. We'll see how well I do grocery shopping this week. I'll just remember fruit, fruit and more fruit! I may have to get some pretzels or low-fat snack crackers. I can handle eating just the serving size on the box. I don't believe in depriving myself, just setting very strict limits. Keep sending the encouraging words and great recipes. ~ Terri, Indiana

Dear Terri, Sounds like you're getting a handle on those treats and snacks. It's true that complete deprivation does not work. But we've still got to set limits and be sure not to stock red light foods (tempting foods that we cannot resist). And yes, fruit, fruit and more fruit is always a good idea. In fact, you've got me thirsting for an orange. Thanks! ~ OLofWL

Dear OLofWL ~ Thanks for your joyful messages. I'd like to do an art project incorporating the words " I do not want to be a fat American" in several languages.  Can you and your readers contribute any to the collection?  ~ Thanks, Cindy in Chicago

Dear Cindy, You bet! You will send me a jpeg of your completed project for Our Lady's Community Art Garden, won't you?! ~ OLofWL

On last week's KICK - Stressed to My Last Nerve

Janet R. writes
- " I just see one big stress - or that's not on the list that I'm sure you remember -- moving!  I remember hearing that it's way up there with divorce."

Naomi D-B. writes - "I had not thought about Holmes and Rah for a long time. In 1976, I did a small research project "stressful events in lives of women" because theirs was all about people. This meant that the guys' lists did not include "birth of a child" or "menopause" as stressors. In other words, issues particular to women.  But the guys' stuff is still being used?  Curious.
