Motivational Musings

Stressed to My Last Nerve

Are you stressed? Irritable? Having trouble sleeping?
Do you feel like screaming? Crying?  Pouring a jug of water over your boss’ head?

We all feel stressed from time to time, so it’s essential to have an arsenal of coping mechanisms at hand.

Instead of heading for the refrigerator, here are some stress management tips that should help ease the pressures of life!

      • Breathe.  No kidding, take in a few deep cleansing breaths and slow down.

      • Change your routine. If you’ve been sitting all day thinking, get up and get physical.  Take a walk, stretch.  And, if you’ve been lifting heavy boxes from sunrise to sunset, sit down and think deep thoughts.

      • Keep things in perspective.  When you’re in a twist about something, ask yourself, “Will this matter in ten years?  Five years? Tomorrow?”  Most of what frazzles us is just passing through.  Wave goodbye to it.

      • Smile and laugh a lot.  Every chance you get.

      • Prioritize. Concentrate on one task at a time. Multi-tasking can be nerve-wracking.

      • Don’t put off what can be done today. Get those unpleasant tasks out of the way as soon as possible.

      • Call a friend.  Talk it through.  Vent.  (I use 'The Five People Plan.' When stressed or upset, I tell five people about it.  By the time I get to the fifth person, I’m so over it and really tired of hearing myself!)

      • Add Vitamin C to your diet. Studies show that Vitamin C knocks out the secretion of stress hormones.

      • Do something creative! Relieve some tension by using your imagination. Garden, read, sing, dance, paint, draw, play an instrument, make macaroni art - anything you can think of that takes you away from the stress and opens your mind to the possibilities.

      • Chant. Aum Mani Padme Hum

The following is a list of the top 10 stress inducing events, according to the1967 study and follow-up studies conducted by Dr. Thomas H. Holmes and Dr. Richard H. Rah.

1. Death of spouse
2. Divorce
3. Marital Separation
4. Jail Term
5. Death of a close family member
6. Personal injury or illness
7. Marriage
8. Being Fired from work
9. Reconciliation with spouse
10. Retirement

Forgive me, for I have sinned.

I stopped at the deli on my way to work. I ordered a roll with no butter, but when I arrived at my desk and unwrapped it,I found that the roll was buttered - heavily! I should have marched downstairs and returned it. I should have asserted my no butter rights, but instead, I ate it. ~ Yours in sin, Butterball Babe

Dear OLofWL, I have been fortunate to maintain a weight loss of 130 lbs since August of 2001. As of late, however, I find my brain constantly struggling with the need to devour things that for so long I ate in moderation. For instance, when I could usually refuse the batch of cookies or limit myself to one, I find myself returning to my old habits of thinking ..."Darn, these are so good, I must have 5". I don't know what's flipped my switch back the other way. I still eat a very healthy diet and exercise daily, but I find myself binging more then normal. Do you or your readers have any tips for my conundrum? A million thank you's, Sara P., Layton, UT

Dear Sarah,. First and foremost, congratulations on losing 130 lbs. and maintaining it for 4 years! That's an amazing accomplishment that you must acknowledge and recommit to on a daily basis. Re-gaining weight is an insidious thing. I struggle as well with sloppy habits re-entering the picture. You know, an extra cookie, a bite of this, a lick of that. Ultimately, we have to ask ourselves what's going that's triggering this behavior? How would it feel to gain the weight back? (Been there; done that! Do not want to do it again.) When old behaviors show up,which they will from time to time, say hello to them, remind them that it's okay to visit (a very short visit, please), but it's not okay to move back in. Positive self-talk and support, which you've got plenty of here. We're rootin' for you. ~ OLofWL

Dear OLofWL I first learned of your website in Family Circle magazine and have been receiving your motivational e-mails every Monday morning for the past 6 weeks or so.  Your whimsical creativity with the BVM's attributes expands her nurturing, giving, protective demeanor in ways not heretofore explored.   We have a some chickens that we raise for eggs and one of my favorites was--and I'm paraphrasing-- Our Lady of the Perfect Protein.  Thanks again! ~ Sally R., Silver City, NM

Dear Sally, I am always so happy to hear from people who can better articulate what I am doing than I can. Thank you for taking the time to write. I liked OL of the Near Perfect Protein, as well. Eggs are only 75 calories, yoke and all. A great source of protein. ~ OLofWL

Dear Betty, What a great spin on a cold! You sure made (sugar-free) lemonaide out of that lemon! ~ OLofWL
