Motivational Musings
Java Junkies, Rejoice!
Have you heard? Coffee, the most popular drink in America - next to water - may help some lose weight as it increases the number of calories you burn per hour by 44%! Caffeinated coffee increases your metabolism. Cuppa Joe, be mine!
And that’s not all!
My cup runneth over with the virtues of coffee.
- According to a 10-year study conducted by the University of Bristol, scientists have found that a cup of coffee can sharpen your attention.
- Some reports indicate that coffee may reduce the risk of colon cancer by 25%, because it helps to keep you regular. (No need for prunes!)
- Coffee may reduce the risk of bladder cancer, skin cancer, diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, and coffee may reduce the risk of developing kidney stones.
- Theophylline, a compound in coffee, acts as a bronchodilator. For those with asthma, drinking coffee can lessen symptoms by 25 percent.
- Coffee increases your alertness, which may, in fact, allow you to experience the joie de vie!
Now, don’t go hog wild guzzling gallons of the stuff, but it looks as though three or four cups a day (under 2 cups if you’re pregnant) won’t do you any harm.
Coffee Product / Caffeine Range (in milligrams)
Coffee (8-oz cup)
Brewed / 65-120 mg
Instant / 60 - 85mg
Decaffeinated, brewed / 2-4 mg
Decaffeinated, instant / 1-4 mg
Espresso, 1-oz. cup / 30-50 mg
Cappuccino and Latte, 1-oz shot / 30-50 mg
Moccachino, 1-oz shot / 35-55 mg
Full-bodied, dark-roast coffee may contain less caffeine than coffee made from milder, more lightly roasted beans. Arabica beans tend to have less caffeine but are milder in flavor than robusta beans. Also, the caffeine content of prepared coffee beverages may vary depending on the supplier's recipe formula.

I swore off fish and chips, but when I passed the Victory Kitchenette, the aroma got me. No kidding, who amongst us could resist? Not I.

Dear OLofWL,
I am writing in response to Cathy S., Waconia, MN, who wrote to ask how to respond to insensitive remarks by children about her weight. I've had the
same problem with a child's (and adults for that matter) reaction to my
mentally retarded (or "developmentally disabled" - not Down's) sister who
looks different than "normal" people. We were shopping when a small child
ran out from behind a clothes rack and almost ran into my sister. The child
stopped, stared at her, and ran back to the mother and said "Mommy, there's
a monster over there". Well, my reaction was less than positive so any help
Cathy gets with her dilemma would also help me with my sister. I realized
that day that an angry response is not the way to go. Luckily, my sister
doesn't understand the child's reaction. My sister is the most friendly,
loving, non-judgmental person I know and I am always amazed at people's
ignorance towards her and people like her. But I want to be able to
enlighten other people about her wonderful qualities. It's so much more than
what she looks like. ~ Sharon
Dear Sharon, Well said. It seems we - collectively - forget that we were created in a multitude of ways, all beautiful. Thank you for reminding us. ~ OLofWL

Dear OLofWL, This is for Cathy. - Being called "fat" is not a judgment, and you have no reason to feel ashamed of who you are and how much you weigh. If your true goal is weight loss, and you are working on achieving it, don't throw any extra energy into thinking about how other people perceive you. That energy is far better spent on you. Learning to change your lifestyle, eating habits and sense of self is hard work, as Our Lady knows all too well. ~ Anya of Baltimore
Dear Anya, Yes, we know well the challenges one faces when they set out to make big changes. And each and every one of us, no matter how bumpy the road, is brave and amazing! Remember, honor and love thyself first. ~ OLofWL

Dear OLofWL, This morning's 185# officially makes it fifty pounds that I've lost! Loved your article about smiling. I sent it to my granddaughters. When I was a little girl, someone told me that it actually took fewer muscles to smile than to frown, and that smiling (like yawning) is infectious. So I tried it out, when I was about twelve, riding alone (legs swinging, not reaching the floor) on a city bus in Milwaukee, WI. Soon everyone was smiling back at me! ~ Barby, Wisconsin
Dear Barby, Congratulation on being a 50 lb. loser! (I like saying that.) And what a delightful story. It made me smile! Thank you. ~ OLofWL
