I Found My Thrill on Blueberry Hill
A Mini-History
Blueberries - the fruit on a shrub that belongs to the heath family, cousins to cranberries and bilberries as well as azaleas, mountain laurel and rhododendron - are indigenous to North America and have been a part of the American tradition since the days of the Pilgrims. They are in season from mid-April through October, and they range in flavor from mildly sweet to tart .
First known as 'starberries' (there's a star on their bottoms - turn em' over and take a look!), the Native Americans believed that the Great Spirit sent the 'starberries' to Earth to end famine. The Native Americans enjoyed eating fresh blueberries in the summer and dried them for the winter. They used blueberries to make a mean medicine paste. They made blueberry juice and syrup and even blueberry colored paint and dye.
Health Benefits
These unassuming berries are powerful little disease busters and a great source of fiber and nutrients.
Tufts University analyzed over 60 types of fruits and vegetables, while the U.S. Department of Agriculture Human Nutrition Center studied over 40 different types of fruits and vegetables. In both studies, blueberries came out on top, easily the best source of antioxidants (antioxidants help to prevent cellular damage that can lead to cancer), rating highest in their capacity to destroy free radicals. (For the scientific minded, here's a link to Understanding Free Radicals and Antioxidants.)
Blueberries help to cure diarrhea,
prevent and relieve constipation,
fight infection. They lower cholesterol and (like cranberries) blueberries inhibit urinary tract infections. Blueberries are loaded with Vitamin C, which helps to fight cataracts, and flavonoids, which aid in improved circulation. Their potassium levels maintain fluid balance and keep blood press at normal levels.
Blueberries may even reduce the effects of aging as they improve balance, coordination and short-term memory. (I'll have a bucket, please.)
Household Tip
Want to know how to remove blueberry stains?
Soak the fabric for a long time in sour milk. Rinse and wash in warm water. Good luck!

Forgive me, for I have sinned.
Due to illness, I haven't exercised in months. I recently began walking again - everyday - and lost 3 pounds. To celebrate, I had a Big Mac.

Dear OLofWL, Please help. My husband and I separated last summer, and I've put on some weight. I have suffered through a few surgeries, (back, neck and knees) - one 2 days before he left. What can I do to get my heart, head, and body to go forward with renewed strength, comfort, and flexibility? I am doing well to walk. I am an art teacher for 450 wonderfully loving K-6 artists. ~ Jan from Dallas, Texas
Dear Jan, I'm so sorry that you've been through such a rough time. My advice would to focus your loving, kind energy on those 450 wonderful K-6 grade kids and yourself! Paint your woes away. Walk a little further every day. Stretch your arms into the spring sky and smile. Onward and upward. We're rootin' for you every step of the way!~ OLofWL PS: We won't speak of the man.

Dear OLofWL , I hail from a little town in the Berkshires, which is nestled among many mountains. My goal for the new year was to JUST weigh less on the last day of each month. So far so good. I have lost my first 10 pounds, YAHOO!!! I paint ceramics, crochet, sew (in the process of making my daughter a queen/size double wedding ring quilt) and now that the weather is better doing tons of my favorite thing, ‘yard work and gardening’. I love your pictures – they are really cool. ~ Linda D., The Berkshires
Dear Linda, Congratulations on your 10 pound loss! Yahoo, indeed! Please send in some of your work (via email; jpgs) for Our Lady's Community Art Garden. We'd all love to see some of your ceramics and crocheting. The wedding ring quilt sounds terrific. Here's to a busy, happy, weight-loss craft filled spring and summer. Thanks for writing. ~ OLofWL

Current exhibition: Little Green Trike
by Gwen Card, Southern Ontario.
Although I am still struggling with the pounds, I have finally gotten back to some daily exercise – treadmill/resistance training and of course, the daily walks with the canine kids. On that note, I was thinking of how much fun it was to “exercise” when we were kids, although we called it playing back then. I had so much fun painting this “Little Green Trike” in fun, happy colours to help keep me motivated – a colourful reminder of the fun in exercising! ~ Gwen Card, Southern Ontario
