Motivational Musings
Creative Acts of Weight Loss
Who is creative? You! Research shows that any person of average intelligence or aptitude is capable of committing creative acts of weight loss. (When you made breakfast this morning, Did you create a healthy start to the day? Or did you create a donut-filled sugar-rush-filled morning?)
Consider Heritage Illustrated Dictionary's definition of creativity:
Create: To cause to exist, Bring into being, Originate, To give rise to (Did you ever bake a cake?) Bring about, Produce, To be first to portray and give character to a role or part (I played the part of a heavy girl for decades. I should have received an Oscar.) Creation: An original product of human invention or imagination. Creative: Characterized by originality and expressiveness, imaginative.
Your creativity is shaped by your experiences, your talent (yes, you are naturally loaded with it), your ability to think and approach subjects in new ways (looking at weight loss from a new angle, as in weight loss is fun), and your capacity to push through despite missteps, mishaps, and slip-ups (it’s not hopeless - no matter how many times you have failed; it’s just part of the process).
Be excited. You're on the Road to Sveltesville. Yahoooo! Enthusiasm will give you a creative boost and you will naturally approach weight loss with an open mind and from a more positive and creative place. Our Lady of Weight Loss is convinced that vast creative resources lie dormant within you. You can realize your potential. You can integrate the essence of who you are – your ‘thinner-core’ - into your weight loss plan.
Knock down those self-imposed “I can’t do this. This is too hard.” barriers! Be creative about your weight loss plan.
Here are some ways to help get your creative juices flowing (and to keep you out of the kitchen).
Listen to music by Johann Sebastian Bach.
Journaling – Morning pages a la Julia Cameron's The Artist’s Way.
Fresh Input – Do something new each day. (Listen to a new radio station; read a different magazine; take an alternative route to work). Note: I did not say to watch a new television show.
If you insist that you must draw to be creative, try Betty Edwards’ book – Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. As it turns out, drawing is something anybody can do.
Do the 'happiness' exercise. Write the word Happiness in the middle of a sheet of paper, draw lines radiating out, circling around it from the word. What random thoughts about happiness come forward? Write them down. Try not to think. Just go with it. (Note: You might be surprised to see what does not enter the happiness picture.)
Adopt a Genius for Your Role Model – Read about your favorite genius. Maybe you’ll learn something about yourself!

Forgive me, for I have sinned.
I had a bad week. A client brought in a box of Godiva chocolates. A thank you for my going beyond the call of duty. I couldn’t very well so ‘no, thank you.’ Could I??? I graciously accepted the chocolates, opened the box, and well … you know the rest.
I am dipped in chocolate; covered in sin.

Dear OLofWL, Is it a sin to throw away chocolate? It sure seems like
a sin.
I don't know what else to do about the three (yes three) one pound
solid
chocolate bunnies that made their way into our household thanks to my
mother. I don't want to repeat the Valentine's Day solid chocolate
heart
bender. My mother refuses to realize that chocolate gifts are like
throwing
police stop-sticks under the wheels of my wagon. I posted last week's
newsletter on the fridge, but I'm weak. What should I do?~ Lorre
Dear Lorre,
No, it is not a sin! Throw out those bunnies, now!!!
I'd say give them away to some kids, but why sugar them up.
Toss them, pat yourself on the back! Feel good that you are committed
to yourself. Lorre, YOU are better than chocolate bunnies! I know I've said it before, and I'm sure I'll say it again. You are not weak. There is no such thing as will power. Only want power. ~ OLofWL

Dear OLofWL,
A note to Melanie who gained 20 of her lost 55 pounds back. I can totally idenfy with her. I lost 46 and gained 20 back. I am having a tough time too. I know that I have to clean my enviroment. Then if it isn't here.......i won't eat it. We'll "root" for each other. ~ Lola, Washington
Dear Lola, How lovely - you and Melanie can "root" for each other. I love the phrase, "a clean environment." It's brilliant! And once again, it underscores the point. If you have it in the house, you will eat it. Get rid of all the red light foods. There's no point in torturing ourselves. ~ OLofWL

Dear OLofWL, Yesterday's misdeed and samplings of my grandchildren's Easter candy are over. I wish only to thank thee for this wonderful, humorous prayer and brightly painted Our Lady. You are such a kindred spirit to all of your members. Thank you! ~ Joan, Wilsonville, Oregon PS: I read your poem to my bridge group and they thought it was just great.
Dear Joan, You are more than welcome! I'm so glad you enjoyed the Easter prayer. Thanks for your kind words and for spreading the word! ~ OLofWL
