Our Lady is Stronger than Dirt

Housework as Exercise!
Wanna polish off that piece of cake? Try polishing the dressers instead.

Given the amount of running around I do, I barely have enough time to sleep, much less exercise and/or clean. (Plus, I resist – neither activity is my favorite). How can I squeeze 30 minutes of exercise into my day?

The Mayo Clinic suggests combining housework and exercise. “Make household chores count. Mop the floor, scrub the bathtub or do other housework. The stretching and lifting are good exercise. Work at a fast pace to get your heart pumping.”

Our Lady suggests we add one mammoth helping of music to the Mayo's 'housework as exercise' workout program. As we know (see Top Ten Exercise Tips ), music activates the same feel good center of the brain that food does. If we could dust, mop, stretch and sweat to the the beat of Motown, we'd burn calories, have a clean house and get our endorphins (those morphine-like substances that our body produces that enhance the immune system, relieve pain, reduce stress, and postpone the aging process) pumping too.

What songs does Our Lady squat, bend, push, pull and lift to? Aretha Franklin’s “Respect” and "Pink Cadillac," Gwen Stefani's "Rich Girl," Outkast's "The Love Below," andTina Turner’s “Proud Mary.”

Tasty Tidbit: Housework as exercise is not a new concept. In October, 1901, Good Housekeeping published an article entitled "Housework as Exercise." The author was an un-named teacher of physical culture. Her message was to . . . . "Unbutton those tight collars, take off the corsets and petticoats, hike up those long skirts and pull the blinds. Whenever possible wear a gymnasium suit for scrubbing and sweeping."

Righteous Recipe ~ Twice Baked Potatoes (More beige food! I just can't get away from beige!!)

Ingredients:
• 2 medium potatoes, once baked
• 1/2 cup low-fat sour cream
• 1/4 cup low-fat cottage cheese
• 4 tbsp. low-fat Monterey Jack cheese, grated
• 1 tsp. dill
• 4 tbsp. green onion, chopped

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Bake the potatoes until soft; about 45 minutes.
Cut baked potatoes in half - length wise. Spoon out center of potatoes, being careful not to break the shells. Put the shells back into the oven for 10 minutes, so skin gets nice and crispy.

Mix low-fat sour cream, cottage cheese, monterey jack cheese and dill until smooth, with electric blender, Add green onions to potato mixture. Spoon mixture into potato shells. Sprinkle tops with paprika. Place in oven for 15-20 minutes until heated through. Yields 4 servings.

Chewing the Fat - How you doin'? Write Our Lady.
If you've written and your letter has not been published, it's probably coming down the pike and will be in next week's KICK or the week after!

Forgive me, for I have sinned.

I feel so depressed. After losing 7 lbs. over the last six weeks, I've fallen off the wagon. I've been eating Chinese takeout for lunch - every day!

All is Forgiven * Move On.

Send your confession to info@ourladyofweightloss.com.

Dear OLofWL, We are always so angst ridden and depressed about trying to lose weight. I love this approach. I've lost 30 pounds and have kept it off for four years through a divorce and other life stresses. But I am struggling a little now since I've turned 50. I am praying to Our Lady of Weight Loss to help me find it in me to persevere. Thanks for breathing a breath of fresh air into this dilemma. ~ Maureen, Penn.

Dear Maureen,
Congraulations on losing 30 pounds plus the extra 160 or so (your ex-husband!). If you can manage to get through a divorce, my money is on you. You'll persevere and keep it off. I read that body fat typically doubles between the ages of 20 and 60. Research shows that older women who eat less but more often burn fat equally as well as younger women who eat three larger meals per day. In other words, try mini-meals (see KICK #19) . ~ OLofWL

* * *

Dear OLofWL, I love that you used your creativity to help you lose weight. I am trying to do that. I was wondering if you had to keep food journals, and what is in your pantry? My weakness is also anything cake-like; donuts, cupcakes and such. Did you make the painting of cake and that is the only kind of cake that you have? I did the whole food journal thing a couple of years ago. It did help for a while and then I couldn't take it anymore. All I thought about was my food intake. I would like to think about food less not more. Any advice? Oh, I also have two young children 2-1/2 and 6 years old.  Thanks, Shannon B., Arizonia

Dear Shannon,
My hats off to anyone who has children and loses weight! I confess that when I would serve my kids, I'd eat the leftovers on my way back into the kitchen. We give food such crazy mind-altering powers. In answer to your question, yes, I did and do keep a food journal. In fact, my suggestion is to make it as lush a food journal as possible. Use glitter, stickers, cut out photos of food, write in different color pens. Make it fun!!!! If you want to write a line or two at the end of the day about what was going on - like a regular dairy - do so. When you look back over the weeks and months, you will learn all kinds of cool stuff about yourself. Very insightful! Oh, my pantry is void of cake, cookies, candy, etc. No point in torturing myself! I keep a bowl filled with fresh fruit and tons of vegetables cut and ready to go. Dessert is sometimes no-sugar pudding or low-cal, low-fat ice cream. ~ OLofWL

Here's an update from Lu - She invited Our Lady of the Indoor Pool to accompany her as she increased her breast strokes.
Lu made great strides, reached her goal ... but now what?

Dear OLofWL, I am unable to do a cartwheel (except in my imagination), but I am able to swim a mile!! Yeah! I did it (I'm bragging now!)  4 days early and I was able to do it again on my 50th birthday and shave 10 minutes off my time! So I think Our Lady threw me a couple of Twinkies toward the end of the miles. She also gave a giggling benediction! But, it's kind of a let down now. What should I do? (besides buy LOTS of lotion--chlorine is tough on my soft delicate skin!) Do I try to jog a mile now? (I'd rather have a tooth pulled!) Do I actually attempt to lift a mile of weights? (Can you do that?) OR, Do I spend $39.00 on "Billy's Boot Camp"? I'm throwing it out to Our Lady to see what she suggests. I'll let you know!  ~ Hugs and army boots, LU

Dear Lu,
Congratulations on reaching your goal! Bravo, well done! I understand that reaching one's goal can feel anticlamatic. The trick is to keep going. It's about continuity and longevity. Swim the same one mile four or five times a week, and perhaps increase it to 1.5 miles over time. The real win is that you stick to it. The goals we meet along the way are merely markers. Give yourself a big hug for creating your new lifestyle. Celebrate the journey! Now, go buy yourself some boots!! ~ OLofWL PS: Don't underestimate the imagination. If you see cartwheels, you'll be doing them in the not-too-distant future!
