Climb aboard.
The Weight Loss Resolution Bandwagon is leaving the Weigh-In Station in 5 minutes.

Did you fall off the proverbial weight loss bandwagon this holiday season?
Did you gain a pound, two or maybe even four?  More?

Not to worry.  Weight loss is a process.  It requires work, it involves challenges - and falling off the wagon and finding yourself a bit bruised and bloated is par for the course.

Those who reach their weight loss goals are the ones who get back on the wagon again and again.  They learn to see that these setbacks are temporary lapses, and they learn from them. They look at the big picture over a long period of time.  They understand that there are no magic bullets, no quick fixes.  The turtle wins this race.

Here are a few thoughts and tips to get you and keep you on track.

Practice Loving-Kindness. Please stop saying mean things to yourself and being so hard on yourself.   (If someone else called you a fat pig, you’d punch them in the nose!)

Forgive and forgetConfess your food sins and move on.

Surrender.  Take each day as it comes. Don’t put a time limit on your weight loss goals. As long as you are truly committed to your plan – to yourself – then you are on the right track and you are succeeding.

Postcards from the Edge:  Buy a pack of postcards or greeting cards, and mail yourself a kind and encouraging note.  Getting mail is so much fun.  It’s okay to be quirky, kooky and creative when it comes to weight loss. “Hi Jane, I know how hard it was for you to say no to that cake.  Thanks. Love, Jane"

Get support from friends and family or someone who will cheer you on. Steer clear of the saboteurs. (The Our Lady of Weight Loss Cheerleaders are here for you.)

Positive Self-Talk. If you think you’re not going to make it, you won’t.  Counter the negative thoughts with positive thoughts.  "Yes, I can do this. Losing weight is a piece of cake."

Out with the Old. Toss out the ‘devil food’ if you please and stock your house with the right stuff.

Write Out Your List of Reasons
: I want to lose weight because ____________. (fill in the blank and be honest) "Be healthy. Look younger. Be socially acceptable. Make that rat who left me feel real bad."

Up Your Fruit and Vegetable Intake. “They” recommend eating at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables per day.  Nine is even better. Remember, you don’t want to feel hungry. Fruits and vegetables are vitamin-rich foods that boost your fiber and antioxidant intake and help you feel full.

The 80/20 Rule. No one is perfect 100% of the time. If you follow your weight loss plan 80% of the time, and treat yourself to an occasional treat 20% of the time, you should be able to achieve and maintain your weight loss goals.

Practice Gratitude. Keep a gratitude journal.  Every night before you go to sleep jot down at least 5 things that you have to be grateful for.  Eating is often about filling a void.  Perhaps the void isn’t as deep as you think!

Dare to Dream - Happy One Year Anniversary KICK in the TUSH Club!!!

The KICK in the TUSH Club – my last year’s New Year’s Resolution - was launched one year ago (January 5, 2004).  It was my intention to create a piece of Weight Loss Art each week to send to my friends and family. It would keep me busy and out of the kitchen, and I hoped that these "Art-KICKS" might inspire someone else to stay with their weight loss goals - to live a healthier lifestyle.

Miraculously, my friends and family began to forward the KICKS to their friends and families, and it soon became clear that there existed a community of people just like me –struggling to lose and keep their weight off – looking for new and creative ways in which to accomplish this challenge.

In just one year, I am pleased to say that the KICK in the TUSH Club is E-sent every Monday morning to over 3000 ‘devotees!’  We (Our Lady and I) have been written about in several publications including Herbs for Health and Good Housekeeping!

My heartfelt thanks to YOU for being an integral part of my dream.  For reading and forwarding the KICK, writing to Our Lady, and for lending your much appreciated support. Thank you!

What are we without our dreams?  Follow your thread of truth.

Chewing the Fat - How you doin'? Write Our Lady.

Dear OLofWL, I quit smoking (Again. Long story.) and gained 7 lbs. I SWEAR I didn't eat any more than usual and was at a loss until I discovered that nicotine withdrawal may slow the body's basal metabolic rate. Mine was already a mess. This slowing can be prevented by weight training exercise to build muscle. Which will speed it up. Hope this helps someone else give up the Evil Weed.

Tried the Skinny Hoppin' John recipe. Non-vegetarians can add an envelope or two of Goya Ham Flavoring when adding the scallions &c. (One cup of peas you should use 1/2 to 1 envelope of Goya Ham Flavoring.) It adds that good smoky, hammy flavor with only a few calories.    Back to 20 lbs down, 20 to go...    Jean, Mouse and Boom-Boom

Dear Jean, Mouse and Boom-Boom, GREAT that you quit smoking. What a wonderful way to start the New Year - with clear lungs. Thanks for the info about weight training exercises - and for the recipe variation. Three cheers for you! ~ OLofWL

Dear OLofWL, I need a serious kick in the tush. I have gained 4 pounds!!! I think it is a lack of activity (except for eating and bending my elbow with the intention of putting something in my mouth). Tell me I can get back in the groove. I have worked too hard to loose my focus now!!!!!!!!!!!! HELP ~ AP, Michigan

Dear AP, You are funny. You CAN get back in the groove. Focus. You'll be fine. Gaining weight is frightening. We think that we are doomed to fail. But that's based on past history. You're in the present and it's a whole new ball game. You're in the Groove. ~ OLofWL

Forgive me, for I have sinned.

I ate all the crumbs off the top of the apple crumb cake before it hit the Christmas table. It wasn't pretty. Not the cake, not me, not the look on my mother's face!
