Our Lady Rich in Calcium
It's not the load that breaks you down,
it's the way you carry it. ~ Lena Horne

A recent study conducted by Michael Zemel, Ph.D., professor
in the Department of Nutrition and Medicine at the University
of Tennessee found that over a 12 week period, dieters who
reduced their daily calorie intake by 500 calories and made
three 6 oz. servings of light yogurt per day a part of their
food plan, lost on average 13 pounds more than those who just
reduced their caloric intake but ate no yogurt. The yogurt-eaters
lost 22% more weight, lost 61% more body fat, and lost 81%
more stomach fat. The yogurt-eaters lost fat, not muscle.
Remember: That's three containers of 6 oz. light yogurt (90
calorie yogurt) - not six containers of 8 oz. sugar-filled
yogurt, or eight containers of 4 oz. fat-filled yogurt. Size
matters. For best results, select yogurt that is less than
2 grams of fat; less than 28 grams of sugar and one that provides
at least 20 percent of the Daily Value (%DV) for calcium.
For you LOW-CARB people, Drs. Jack Goldberg and Karen O'Mara
explain that yogurt isn't as high in carbohydrates as it appears
to be. It has something to do with bacteria having "eaten"
most of the milk sugar by the time you buy it. According to
Drs. Goldberg and O'Mara, a half cup of plain yogurt only
counts as 2 grams of carbohydrates. For a full explanation
and information, visit their site "Low
Carb Luxury." You decide.
Did you know that Americans eat over 300,000 tons of yogurt
each year? Yogurt straight from the container is yummy but
variety is key to weight loss success. Stoneyfield
Yogurt lists a bunch of great recipes. But please - be
careful. Read! Some are low-fat, some not!

Dear OLofWL, How come my sugar free Jell-O
packs say they have 10 calories? Also, is there such a thing
as fat-free, sugar-free chocolate pudding? ~ Mmmmmm,
East Brunswick, NJ
Dear Mmmmmm, Good questions. To be sure my
information accurate, I called Jell-O (1-800-431-1001) and
researched their website.
First, let's talk gelatin. Calories are determined by the
amount of carbohydrates, fat and protein in each ingredient.
While there is no sugar, there are other ingredients that
contain enough of the aforementioned to equal 10 calories.
Jell-O INSTANT fat-free sugar-free chocolate pudding is 35
calories per serving, vanilla - 25 calories per serving, as
packaged. You need to adjust the numbers after you add milk.
Jell-O Pudding Snacks Chocolate Fat Free / 6 per carton are
100 calories per serving, 0 fat. Enjoy! ~ OLofWL
